does anyone have any pics of how this is done? I have been searching the tech folder and cant find any info on it...thanks....just want to know where the regulator is and how to do it
The FPR is located on the driver side of the engine mounted fuel filter. Remove the 3 torx tip screws and GENTLY remove the cap. Removing the screws requires a little skill and patience. Suggest you put a rag under the FPR so when the screws fall out before you can catch them they won't go hide. Been there, done that! You will see a spring inside a brass cup. That is the FPR spring. Remove the spring, put the BB in the spring hole in the brass cup, put the spring back in the hole, check the O ring seal on the cap and install the cap.
My experience with the BB mod is it raised the fuel pressure from the OEM 45 psi to around 60 to 62 psi. Depends how old the OEM spring is. Mine had around 82,000 miles on it. They do get weak over time.
Ford has a FPR spring upgrade kit available that I believe raises the fuel pressure to around what the BB mod does. Not sure about this. Maybe someone else who has installed the upgrade kit and has a FP gage can verify.
I have an Airdog 2 fuel pump installed with an internal pressure regulator set to 75 psi. I also have a pillar mounted FP gage. When I start the motor my pressure is around 62 psi. After the glow plugs finish there cycle, usually about 10 to 15 seconds then my fuel pressure goes to 75 psi and stays there unless I really dog it.
I would venture a guess that with the OEM spring that at start the fuel pressure is only about 30 to 35 psi until the glow plugs finish cycling then it goes to 45 psi. And from what I read, that ain't good.
