That was the first thing that I did check. I removed each glow plug, put an neg alligator clamp on the threads, and put the top of the glow plug on the positive terminal. All 8 have lit instantly. I also did a burn out test, I had one extra glow plug and I put it on the battery, It lit for 30 seconds straight before it burned out. It didn't explode, mushroom out on the end, or anything like that.
I have Beru on order. they should be here next week. Like I said, I know autolites are not the best or even good bu that is what the parts store had so that is what I got, that was two years ago and they still lite. On the other hand I AM having starting problems!! I'll let you know how it goes, thanks for the advice.
Auto lite part number 1107 is what I am burning.
Have you checked all the high amp connectors, like the chassis to engine harness connector, they like to burn and not provide all the amps/current required yet still show good voltage, you also can test the voltage at a Glow Plug and at the battery QUICKLY while the glow plugs are on, there should only be a couple volts difference.
YUP, I was too low on voltage. I only had 5.5 volts going the plugs. I redid some wireing for my push button system and now I have 9.5 volts. My Beru plugs are still not here but I will get them in as soon as they arrive. I'll see how the autolites start tomorrow with more voltage
Thanks for working with me Festus

Whew ... Thank goodness, Some people run a wire from their battery to their switch then directly to the glow plugs ... Thats a method that could change the meaning of "family barbecue" ...
As it's been cooling off mine has been being a tad tougher to start as well. However there's 250k on my injectors and while the injection pump is a rebuilt unit, I don't know how many miles are on it and the internal advance no longer works. She'll be getting a new pump and injectors within the next month. I'm sure the internal advance goes a long way to helping it start cold and is the primary problem. But everything else on my truck has been taken care of so this is the end of the list for repair items. All that will be left is custom dump box and lighting and onboard air.
But if you jumper 12v to the internal advance terminal you should hear a noticeable change in the sound of the engine if it's working. If you're not getting the advance turning on in the pump I think it'll fight you a fair bit. At a few hours in 50* I can cycle the GP's one time and it takes about 5 seconds of cranking, usually with a quick "half start" that gets the engine going just enough to disengage the starter but not enough to keep running heh
