Heres the situation. Me and pops are gonna replace a 351m in a 78 f150-c6 4x4 with either a W or a C. He really wants a Cleveland, but i would prefer a Windsor. Im aware of the poor oiling system in the cleveland, but I like the heads that were on the C. I like the Windsor because of support in the aftermarket and better oil system than the C. If i remember right, the heads are interchangable, but i might just be getting the C mixed in with the 302, which i know is in the same engine family with the windsor.. I guess what im getting at is what would you "gurus" go with. I guess i should also say im were are looking for about 350 HP/Torque. What do yall think would be better?
if money were no object i'd say go with the clev, they can be real powerhouses, but the windsor can make as much power for lot less $$$$. that being said , neither engine will bolt up to the tranny you have behind your 351m,as the belhousings are different
351C is actually in the 335 series family, with the 351M and 400 (these heads all interchange except for port size). The 302 and 351W are in the Windsor family (351C heads fit, but water passages are different). If it were me, the 351W would be better suited for a truck. The 351C is a flat out performer for higher RPM cars, but to each their own, lol. And that's coming from a 351C guy.
well, a 460 would be good, but we talked about that earlier and he doesnt want a 460. We have narrowed it down to the 351s. well, if i cant do a bellhousing swap, we can pull the tranny with the motor in the junkyard and go from there
perches are the same for any 351, so as long as you have 4x4 motor mounts, then it's game on. You'll need a rear sump oil pan, and matching tranny as you know. Finding an earlier 80's 4x4 w/351W 4bbl would get ya started pretty good.
If you can find a 94-97 5.8 it will be a roller block with most likely E7 heads. This is a good starting point for a solid motor. Look at 88-89 mustang AOD for a trans if 2WD. A 4x4 version if needed. This will give you a very good drivable truck with lots of upgrade options for the money. Leave the 351C for a go fast(hi RPM) car.
Just my opinion. I even considered the 300 six except for lots of long distance highway driving. I would have used it if it was going to be local only with lots of offroad.

jackpot. i know where 2 are.
as for a 94-97, i dont remember seeing one in the junkyards around here, but then again, i wasnt looking for one the last time i went, but there were quite a few trucks that year when i went, so i guess the odds are prety good
