Ok, so last month I the truck crapped out on me and I replaced the ICP with one from IH. The truck has been running fine other than the fact that it feels like when I have steady throttle at 1800 rpm, the idle will fluctuate. If you give it more fuel it runs fine.
I have replaced the CPS with one from IH and didnt make a difference. It was replaced before the ICP.
Today on the way home the CEL came on the truck didnt have any power, but then it would pick up and go on. I made to my driveway and reved it up one time and it cut off andwouldnt start back. I got out unplugged the ICP and it started and ran. Plugged that back in and it had a hesitation to it every so often. The truck will start and idle fine. Think its time to finally replace the IPR? Can it be replaced without pulling the HPOP? Any thoughts?
I checked the price of the IPR when I got the ICP from IH and it was $300 or in the area the best I remember but they had it in stock.
I have the hucth and harpoon modes so I have the extra prepump filter which was just replaced at the last oil change, about 1500k ago.
I do have a programmer but I no longer use it for anything but the gauges. Just adding this info....
Yes the IPR can be removed without pulling the HPOP or the fuel bowl filter. Unplug the wires, remove tin nut, slide soleniod off, then stick a deep socket on there and unscrew. Not all sockets are deep enough to slide on there and still allow you to get the ratchet in the socket. I got one from NAPA that is deep enough and made the change simple.
IPR is a possibility, but that doesn't explain why the truck suddenly started and ran better with the ICP unplugged. If I were in your shoes, I'd be checking the wiring to the ICP looking for any chaffed wires or burnt insulation. There's also a chance the new ICP is now bad.
Assuming this problem returns tomorrow, keep playing with unplugging the ICP to see if that fixes it every time. If the wiring checks out, call IH and ask them how long the warranty is on parts like the ICP.
Thanks for the reply Chris. I'll check the wires tomorrow. Once Iunplugged and plugged the ICP back up it still didnt run exactly right. It had the bit of stutter to it.
But how did it run when it was unplugged? When you unplug the sensor, it causes the PCM to ignore the sensor and run off of a pre-programed default table value. When you plug it back in, it runs off the sensor again after a minute or so.
Unplugged = runs good and plugged in = runs bad points to a bad sensor or wiring.

It didnt run to good when I had it unplugged at first but it striaghtened out a little bit in the time it took me to get out the truck and plug it back, but still not normal.
I just went out and ran it a little bit and it will not hold a steady rpm when reved up, holding a steady pedal. It will fluctuate a few hundred rpm up and down if that means anything.
Thanks caverjoe, I had found that and posted the link in my 2nd post.
my bad I C now. I am just in a real good mood cause that little fix worked for me and saved me the $1500 the Ford dealer wanted to change out my bad HPOP.
Had the truck hooked to a computer yesterday and it also had a 1280 code in it. The guy that hooked it up said the icp was low while running and I now know its not the icp sensor or ipr valve. Can't see any wires that look cut or messed up. Any thoughts?
