Hey Dan, do you know what ZF transmissions use for fluid??
really???? rob, your not dumb. an auto will be toast after a handful of extended runs with 2-300* temps, a manual, no. compare the amount of consumables between the two. it's not the breakdown of the fluid that kills autos, it's all the **** that ends up in the fluid. pretty sure a truck driver should understand how badly manual transmissions get worked on a regular basis and still perform fine in situations where autos would have failed. steel gears are fine at those temps, and as long as the bearings have some lubrication they will do their job. think about it.
I actually understand how automatics work. I suppose being an ATRA certified tech might have something to do with that. (Automatic transmission re-builders association)
when the fluid breaks down do to temps it looses it's lubricating properties which will destroy a manual transmission even faster then an automatic. The reason it's not usually an issue with manual trans is because in an auto most of the heat is built up in the TC which a manual doesn't have. BUT if heat wasn't an issue, explain why Ford found fit to put a cooler on the ZF-6.
But still not sure what the heck your point is. he asked about his temps. I gave him a chart showing at what temps ATF breaks down, you make some dumbarse comment about me posting a chart for ATF when he runs a manual at which I ask you if you understand what fluid a ZF-5 uses at which you try to make some lame argument about why an auto won't survive 300deg temps showing you don't' even know what kills autos AND manual transmissions.
you can think whatever you want, and yes you have an education in auto tech, but explain to me why autos die way the hell more than manuals? yeah manual clutches fail often, but the atf isn't touching the clutch. and your breakdown chart is a joke. at standard running temps atf will only last 50,000 miles? maybe in an auto with all of the crap floating around in it, and it's still never happened to any of my jalopies, but not in a manual. either way he's running royal purple iirc, so temps and oxidation should be way less of a concern.
just sayin', how many manual transmission rebuilds have been done because of overheating???? me thinks 99% of them would be from crappy drivers and mis shifts/grinding gears causing wear and shavings in the fluid. and it really speaks volumes that it took so long for a fluid pump and cooler to be added to a manual, considering zf 6's haven't been around much more than 9-10 years and power and tow ratings are sky forking high nowadays....yeah, heat will cause a problem with gears...... when your pushing a chit ton of power through them pulling a load. does your semi have a pump and cooler?
