I have a 88 Bronco II 2.9 2wd. I need to get a transmission filter kit. The pan has a 2 inch cup shaped depression in the center of the pan that differs from the Ford and Haynes manual illustration. It also has a cooler radiator. The filter that I have gotten has a inlet that is 3/8" long. I have seen filters with longer inlets than this. Does this type Transmission and pan need the inlet that is longer, and if so, what type do I ask for? Thanks for any help.
That pan sounds like the type used on the 4wd version of the A4LD. Check with your part store for the filter for that model, and see if that has the deeper cup.
The other possibility is, if you can spare the down time, to take off the old filter and bring it with you to the store to find an exact match.
Also, when installing the new filter, make sure the O-rings are properly installed on the small ports.
Thanks for the fast reply! I had the filter out for a change about 3 years ago, and as opposed to the one I got yesterday, the lower half of the filter was plastic with a longer inlet, and somehow I got a like item for the replacement. It was a last ditch effort to save the transmission and had to have it rebuilt anyway. I'll ask for the 4wd type tomorrow and see if that is the one.
