I'm new to the site and have had my 2005 F-350 for 2 years now and have had to replace the egr, hpop, and other sensors lucky they were under warranty but thats besides the point. I'm going to be putting a banks six gun in it and i've been looking into egr deletes, but I've also been looking at exhaust breaks and I'm not sure will this cause more problems than its worth??? I like the idea of having it but if its just going to ruin my motor then I'll just drop the idea entirely.
Thanks
If you are going to tune a 6.0, custom tunes from a reputable tuner is the only way to go. A few that come to mind are Innovative, Spartan, and DP.
First things first though...you need gauages. The list of priorities varies from peron to person, but the basics are as follows, trans temp, egt, fuel pressure, oil temp, coolant temp, voltage, boost (although the boost guages in the 05-07 are fairly accurate) etc. Then and only then would I consider a tune...remember these trucks will lift the heads with a stock program.
As far as an exhaust brake why? are you towing heavy? I had a BD on my truck and when I was towing heavy it worked great with the tow/haul mode. I removed the brake cause I sold the 5er and only tow 10k once and a while now, and the tow/haul feature works great without it to the point there I dont really miss the brake.
yeah i do alot of towing, hauling a mini excavator around and its pretty hilly around these parts I'm not impressed with how it holds back on hills with a load now if its empty then its fine but if i didnt need the truck I'd own a car. As for the six gun tuner why is this a bad choice I was looking at the one with the new Touch screen so it will have all the gauges built into the tuner.
The problem with shift on the fly tuners is they destry the transmissions, especially if you are working that truck hard. I had a 6 gun with the pda and got rid of it almost as fast as I got it.
I have a SCT with tunes from Eric @ innovative and the truck is night and day between the Banks and the SCT.
Another plus with custom tuning is they can build an exhaust brake feature into the tune and utilize the VGT turbo to do this.
Just my opinion and first hand experience with both custom and canned tuning. I will only have a custom tune in my truck.
Alright so how much is one of these tuners from Innovative??? Do they come with a Digital readout like the Banks IQ cause that was the only reason I wanted to use banks cause it gave me all my info right there without having to buy and install a bunch of gauges. I mean I'm not looking for the most powerful truck out there either something mild so i know that theres a diesel under the hood when I step on it. Thanks again guys
The SCt x3 will run you about 400 bucks, not guages its a hand held programmer. If you are looking for somethin that is all inclusive I would steer you twords a Spartan Tuner. His is based off of the Dash Daq.
Go to the top of the page, he is a site sponsor and click on his page. Matts a great guy, but its pricey. I have a Dash Daq as well as analog guages too, I just didnt want to wait for Spartans new tuner 3 years ago when it was being beta tested.
Don't get the Banks.
I had a 6-gun on my 03 and did not like it.
Now on my 07 I have an SCT with tunes from Innovative and Matt at Gearhead performance.
On my tow tunes I have the exhaust brake feature and it works great.
My truck has a daily weight of 12,000 lbs and I tow a dump trailer with a gross of 10,000.
I have come out of the quarry at a GCVW of 23,000 lbs and the tow tune will slow the truck down on a 5-6 % downgrade.
And yes the FIRST thing you need are gauges.
You can also get something like the Edge for your gauges. Edge Products| Product
So let me get this straight, if i get the STC tuner with the exhaust brake in the tune I wont have to buy an actual exhaust brake for $1200??? And if I get the edge display for the gauges I should be all set for the tuner and exhaust brake. Then I'll just have to do the egr delete kit.
The only problem with the spartan phalanx is that you are then locked into only one person for the tuning.
With an SCT there are a few very good people that you can get tunes from.
Alright so now for the next question I see alot of you are running MPRP exhausts is this the best way to go for a turbo back exhaust???
Most people choose MBRP because its a great product. There are a ton of other kits out there too, the possibilities are endless. I am not sure where you are located, but I would say if you are anywhere where they apply salt to the roads buy the stainless kit. You can buy a turbo back with or without a cat delete pipe depending on your prefernces. Also remeber that if your state tests for emmissions and your cat falls off you wont pass. Also if you are under warranty the dealer may hassle you on any of these mods.
Well im from Vermont so yeah they use salt and no we have no emissions on vehicles, so it shouldnt be a problem. And is there any difference between the 403ss and 309ss exhausts
