Newbie from Calif.
Last year I got an 1983 F250 Supercab, Heavy Duty, longbed pickup from my brother. He moved up to a 2007 Ford crewcab F350 dually. The '83 had only 94000 miles. The vin # is 1FTHX25L
KA54590/COLOR:copper/light desert tan, code 8J 9Q, victoria-style. It has a Dana 70 rear w/4:10 (brother had changed internals from 3:54) Body Code: DHM. I found a metal tag on a wire under the hood behind the left headlight- A54590 AS R25 FF TP / LM 8J9Q LT RS NP / VG 2T 72 / PO SC EF / AC 5 I-280 Can anybody can translate this tag ? Sorry for the ramble....thank you all very much. Fred. Why does a smily face block the check digit and the year digit ??

Why does a smily face block the check digit and the year digit ??As for the smiley face, whichever characters you typed in the vin number most likely were the ones used to make that smiley, so it thought you were trying to put a smiley in there. It happens quite a bit here.
The # was the 8-factory digit; the next one was the year digit: D (1983) Thanks for the welcome. Fred
I'd decode the Vin for ya, but i'm not near any of my books. I can tell you that 1FT means USA Ford Truck, X25 means F250 Super Cab, and A54590 is the unit of assembly. Your truck is the 54,590th off the assembly line for the 83 model year.
