Well started the truck this morning and heard a Knock that lasted about 5 to 10 seconds...Is this a bad thing... Could it be rod knock... I will tell you it was close to empty and the temp was about 50*F this morning and it did drop into the high 30 over night... How could you tell the diference between rod knock and diesel knock????
I run 15w40 motorcraft oil and filter just changed less than 400 miles ago
Its hard to say without hearing it. Every diesel truck makes its own noises, I think it even states that in the owners manual. I know my truck is a little more noisey on the colder mornings here, but its not a knock. You would know if your truck had a rod knock it would be real noticeable in a diesel engine.
Have you ever considerd switching to a 5w40 synthetic diesel oil. I run Rotella T6, and my cold weather starts are way better, and cold weather noise is not as noticable.
I just run the oil recommended by Ford.. It says to run 15 w 40... Wondering if fuel quality could have anything to do with it... Brought diesel at this real out of the way gas station and never added the diesel Kleen... Used the mechanics stethoscope and got a nice whooshing noise from the pan... No knocking after filling up and driving it all day (checking on it periodically).. Would it be safe to assume rod knock on a diesel would be pretty pronounced... How common is rod knock on a 6.0.. And is there a way to differentiate between rod knock and diesel knock... What can cause rod knock..
really rod knocks and volume depend on how bad the knock is. 6.0's are not knowen to toss rods out to often.
how do you tell the differance... thats a hard question. I just know.
Cheezit.. Can bad fuel and tank almost empty cause a knocking(first thing in the morning).. I would of isolated the sound if I had more than a few seconds before it disappeared.. AI would also think the knock would get worst with heat and the oil thinning out.. But since I checked it using one of those(don't laugh) stethoscopes I couldn't find or hear the knock???(nice whooshing sound from the pan and the general lite tap from the side of the block...
Wouldn't rod knock get worst after it heats up???...
fuel knocking is going to happen with low fuel pressure, or anything like gelling. It can also be caused by low battery voltage or ficm concerns.
rod knocks dont always get worse... but they never get better.
Cheezit what I meant is wouldn't rod knock become more noticeable when the engine heats up and the oil thins... Instead of disappearing within 5 seconds of start??? So poor quality of fuel will not cause diesel knock??
poor fuel quality, fuel mixed with water or gas will as well.
a rod knock will not really change much with temp unless it really bad.
the bottom end of a 6.0 is about as good as they come. Very few lower end issues that cant be explaned. I dont think I have ever hung a set of bearings in a 6.0. No rods either.
Ive seen one broken crankshaft, that one was caused by a bad case of dumba$$

Cheezit.. So if it were rod knock would it disappear after it runs for 5 seconds??? Or Should it be always there... It just did it this morning for the first time for 5 seconds on initial start up.. After that I never heard it again??
