Tow Package Determination

I am looking at buying a 2001 Expedition XLT. How do I determine if the vehicle has a factory tow package?

It has a 5.4L Triton V8

Thanks
Doug

look out back does it have a hitch? should be a sticker on it that gives you the tongue wt and max wt. does it have a 4 flat or 7 round plug? Look up front behind the grill you should see an oil cooler and tranny cooler.

The truck has the hitch and receiver that is mounted under the bumper, not with a cut out bumper, with the 7 pin plug.

My engine expertise is nill, so when looking for the oil and tranny coolers, what am I looking for.

Someone mentioned to me here at work, that is might be a heavy duty tow package and that is why the hitch is mounted below the bumper.

Any help is appreciated.

I don't think there is such a thing as a HD tow package on the Expy. You either have the tow package or not. The hitch below the bumper is the standard tow package hitch.

I think in the literature they refer to it as a HD Tow Package, but as BG points out, there is only one. The under bumper location is not much of an indicator of factory tow package, as that is where an aftermarket hitch would go to. The tranny cooler is the thing to look for. It is basically a small radiator right in front of your regular radiator. You could also just call a dealer with your VIN and they can look up the vehicle for you.

It's referred to as HD because it's a 2" receiver instead of a 1-1/4" one.

Didn't the Expedition come with a Class IV hitch instead of a Class III?
