I need to replace the lower ball joints on my 1997 2WD F150 pickup. I don't own a remover, so I'd like to buy one. Looking around, there's pickle forks, c-clamp styles, and "reverse" clamps designed to pry apart the joint as the clamping bolt is rotated in.

A good thing about some of the c-clamp styles is that they'll do double duty as u-joint tools.

I can go higher than the $40 HF wants, but I need to keep it under $125 or $150.

You want a c-clamp style for this.
I would borrow the tool from a local auto parts store. No reason to buy a special tool like this unless you just want to.
