We've heard that before. Since they aren't going with the F100 how do they figure a F150 will cover the Ranger market? Kind of reminds me of killing the Taurus, or at least the name, when it was still selling well.
One: FORD will probably wait for the current numbers of used small pickups to dwindle(the market is currently saturated with them) so as to increase demand for a new small FORD pickup in a couple years. (as old trucks are crushed good used choices become fewer and parts are harder to find)
Two: maybe they are finally working out the kinks on a small diesel powered Ranger and it is not ready yet.
The 1983 Corvette was not ready until 1984, the Camaro, Impala, and Caprice went away for a few years and came back...
In the 80's and 90's you had a choice from FORD of the Ranger pickup or their F-Series pickup, that changed with the introduction of the new F150 and Super Duty over 1997/98/99 as they were now selling the Ranger, the F150, and The Super Duty, people went from 2 choices to 3 and maybe sales have reflected that recently. Maybe the market can't handle 3 choices anymore....
From web searching:
The Model T ran 1909 until 1927 = 18 years of production and updating= over 15million made!
The Ranger has run from 1983-now = 28 years of production & updatng= over 7 million made!
Also apparently small trucks made up 8 percent of the market in 1983 and only 2 percent now....

Reason: clarified a thought
Stopping Ranger production in North America is a mistake on Ford's part. Of course they will never sell more Rangers than F-series. The F-series is like that most sold vehicle out there. An F-series would not work for many of us. At least there will be piles of good used Rangers out there for years to come.

Ford of South America has sold a diesel Ranger for years. If they brought that motor into the North American product line up and it wasn't a $6k option, it might be popular here. In spring, a guy I know just bought a new gas engine F-250. He told me the diesel was a $6k option!
When GM,toyota, nissan gobble up Fords Ranger market share, Ford will resurrect the Ranger in some form. There are just somethings that only a small truck can do well, and the Ranger filled that slot admirably and excelled at it for almost 30yrs.
To borrow Ahhhnold's line for the Ranger, "I'll be back"
The current ranger is the last of an old design, and i think people like it for that. Changing to a newer, bigger design makes it just like the rest of the compact pickups out there. If you need a bigger truck..buy a full size. It's as simple as that. Rangers are great commuters, work trucks, and parts chasers and they run forever
