NEED SOME ADVICE PLEASE

Hi all,
I'm new to this site but not to old fords and My question is how much difference is there between the 390 and the 400 ??? I have had several of the 351m 400 family in a few different 1977 high boys,I have just purchased a very nice one owner 1976 high boy with 360 that i find to be guttless .This is my first experiance with the 360 motors and i'm not impresed ,should i look for a 400 or does the 390 have what it takes ?Looking to pull a trailer with a tractor and small stuff i'm not going to abuse it, i would just like a truck that could get out of it's own way if it had to.....

THANKS MIKE...

No replacement for displacement, IMO you could put a few power goodies
(intake/carb/header's) on it and waken it up?

Surf the 385 BB series, 335 series and the FE & FT BB forums for information and advise.

Nice truck BTW.

IMO the 390 has plenty of potential and is well worth putting money into. I've never been a fan of the M series engines.... to each his own.

I share the same opinion.
Plus the 390 is a direct bolt in- in place of the 360.

You could also just make the 360 a 390. Same heads and block from what I've been reading... might want to double check that though.

ahhh the fe series engines, all the same block 352, 360, 390. 352 tbird heads are the best flowing. but to think the 360 is a dog, check the timing on it, an check the cam chain. if the timing is off (retarded) its gonna be a royal dog. bout 4-8 deg advance an it should wake up. I've always thought the fe was a far better engine than the m series. but thats my 2 cents. i've built the 351m/400 on several occasions, an without a cam in em, they just dont make any power. emissions choked!

That 390 can be stroked to 445. Visit Survival Motorsports' website for inspiration and you'll be singing a different tune about your 360 and its potential.

However, it is commonly stated that FE stands for "Freaking Expensive". You be the judge.
