I want to complain about Albuquerque, NM police dept who say they are overwhelmed with ID theft cases that they won't get to mine for several months. Someone stole outgoing mail from my mailbox with checks to pay bills in the morning before the mailman came by. They used my acct info to produce/forge their own checks AND a fake drivers license to "buy" $540 worth of junk from Walmart. Cops say there are over 600 cases before mine. Don't they understand that if they catch one crook, the guy is probably guilty of multiple cases, and they'll be preventing lots of future cases if they toss them in jail. Just give me a video of the transaction. I'll find him and Star Chamber his sorry rearend. Great movie that!
I feel your pain, December of 08 some scumbag stole not only our new bank cards out of the mailbox while we were away visiting family, but came back and also got our PIN numbers as well. Monday morning about 9:00 I get this funny feeling and check the bank account to see $600+ worth of ATM withdrawals that neither my wife or I made. As I'm on the phone with the bank I hit refresh on my browser and see another $300 ATM withdrawal. We freeze the bank account, file a claim at the bank (luckily we got reimbursed for the fraudulent use after about a week), file a case with the county PD (closest local jurisdiction), and they basically tell us to go pound sand because our case crosses 2 states and 3 counties. Thanks for that! A few months later they recover our stolen bank cards in an abandoned stolen vehicle and ask if we want them back... And no, they never caught the sunny beach either.
DAMN Superduty, that's worse than mine! Glad you got the $$ back. I also got my money back immediately. After paying my bank back, Walmart sicced Telecheck on me and said all kinds of nasty things to me. They accused me of writing the bad check, when the number the thief put on the check was in a series never issued to me. I got all the accts changed so I'm out of danger. I told Telecheck and Walmart to pound sand unless they give me the video. I'm not filling out any forms to help them get reimbursed from insurance. Walmart actually gave me a $75 gift card, which I used half of to buy diesel oil.
I'll be getting a locking mailbox soon. I'll have to run to the PO to mail stuff and receive stuff bigger than an envelope now but what choice do ya got?

I still fully intend on parking both our vehicles somewhere out of sight and setting up a "sting" on our mailbox myself... When we go out of town now we have the post office hold our mail until we know we'll be home.
You guys that got your stuff stole need to go on line at one of the credit agencies (I forget one will not charge) there are three of them. But any how enter a fraud alert on your account it will last for 6 months and will keep them from getting cridit cards moved or other big ticket items. Before the 90 days is up you can renew it with no problem but it can expire after 90 days. Here is my thread on the son of a corn.

We did that immediately after the incident at the advice of our bank. Luckily we were dealing with a lowlife petty thief who didn't have the brains to do anything more than steal crap from our mailbox and go to town... literally.
F'ing thieves...our cell phone account got hacked, two new phones added to the account and all that goes with it. Took a few days for phone co. to acknowledge the fraud and then to fix it.

Not sure about any other states than Texas, but I imagine it would be close or very simular. But there is the Criminal Case and then there is a Civil. The state will file criminal charges against teh defendant, however compensatory proceedings are a portion of a civil case. So the plantiff can file a Civil case to get compensation for things like loss of wages or other damages.
Your state- Identity Theft State Statutes
In our case we decided to not file a civil case in that we were just glad to be done with it.
So to sum it up I guess I would like to complain that I think that each states law, although a Felony does not punish the criminal enough to deter other criminal ID thefts from ocurring. Most have some stupid qualifier to the degree, i.e. if its less than 1500 its a class 1 Felony. Thats plan BS.
Oh also whats intrresting is to scroll through and denote the size of each states rulings, funny thing it looks like you can tell where there is more of this sort of crime by the size of the legal descriptions.
Virgin Islands, Florida, Lousiana, California, NY, etc.
Check this one out from V.I. Identity theft of credit, money, goods, services, or other property exceeding $100,000 in value is a felony and is punishable by a term of imprisonment of not less than four years and not exceeding 15 years.
wtf- not less than 4 yrs?
So just remember if you want compensation you may have to see the crook in court and file a civil suit as well. That said I decided not to in that I would have wanted to be like Judge Roy Bean.
So in closing I would like to say whats wrong with this country is we are a nation of the few leading the many. Whats your thoughts on that comment?
Obviously we need to decriminalize drugs and throw all that money towards ID theft.
NAH!! Just make it law that once the thief's identity is determined, hand over that information to the victim(s). This would include any videos and pictures of the transaction shot from security cams. Problem solved and no future crimes committed by that thief.
So I'm pulling a big round baler from one place to another, doing about 25 mph on some rough roads when I hear the unmistakable sound of metal bouncing up and down on the road as I'm driving. Sounds like it's coming from the front half of my truck
Immediately let off the skinny pedal, then hit the radio off button.
Sound goes away all of a sudden. Push then let off go pedal and no noises. No bouncing parts visible in the mirrors. Turn the radio back on and hear the same sound stop and go to some other background music on some stupid radio show.
I think broken mechanical sounds and sirens should be outlawed noises on radio stations.
