retarded timing

I have a thread going in the 6.0l forum.2003 f350 6.0l. I have a diesel question, why would a diesel engine at idle when warm drop timing to -12.00 btdc and up the mass fuel desired to double of a normal idle?Causeing a very quiet engine and eye burning smoke. Or is there a point in the duty cycle of a diesel where -12.00 btdc would be considered normal? Any thoughts would be welcome

Probably emissions, that's the only reason to retard the timing that much...
