timing too far advanced?

Bought a new starter for my truck cause the POS summit hot rod starter was drawing 225 amps at start up. I have had issues starting the pig. It is a 429 transplanted into 78 f250 ranger CS 4x4. Put in a Bosch reman and drove it for the first time to a friends and it would not restart. He immidiately said it is kicking back, I need to retard the timing. Which way do I rotate the dizzy to retard timing? CW or CCW?

Clockwise...now, having said that, if you can either buy a timing light or know a buddy with one, that's the way to go.

My 460 is set at 14º initial, but you might wanna go around 10º to start off.

changing from 10* to 14* initial will help power immensely...just be sure and listen for pinging at full load!

When a timing chain gets stretched it advances the timing. Is your timing chain in good shape.

How the hell can it advance the timing if the chain is longer? It can't, a stretched chain retards the timing.

To the OP, NEVER ever just start cranking your timing around. It is stupid and asking for engine trouble. Never adjust timing without knowing your engine's total mechanical advance. Never advance beyond 38° total mechanical advanced timing either.
