I tried my hardest to get a 460 but ford wouldn't let me have one and I was willing to pay but was only told it could not and would not be done.

Possibly the epa was involved with how trucks were built, because this 400 has vacuum lines all over it and maybe a 460 would have to be approved. I remember asking for a special order, and told the dealer I had known Ford had done them in the past, but to no avail.

Maybe if I had talked to Ford directly, I could have gotten a $ amount for a special order, but I only went through the dealer and the dealer never offered a dealer installation either.

All 1968/82 FoMoCo vehicles w/460's came with C6's. 460 not available with 4WD or M/T until 1983, F250/350 only. All 1983/97 460 M/T came w/a hydraulic clutch.

That certainly was my experience, not offered and you could not request, demand or bribe either.
Some have said the dana 70 rear was not available but I remember seeing the dana 70 tag at one time on mine.

Dana 60 front & rear on 1979 F350 4WD's. Dana 70's 2WD only, first installed in 1961 on some F350's (some '61/62's came with Timken B140), all F350's beginning in 1963.

Rear axle ID tag located on inspection cover does not say Dana 60 or 70. Ford & Dana ID codes have to be decoded to find out which is which.

Ditto Warranty Plate AXLE codes, must be decoded.

Yeah, I must be wrong about the dana 70 then. I thought it was a 70, but I'm probably thinking about another truck.

Thanks Bill!
Any 1 know if I can fit a '73 - '79 F250 knuckle/axle/U joint, etc combo onto my '66 - '77 Bronco but get rid of that huge caliper? It is oem D44 and disc break.
I would cut the 2 axle lengths and respline...
Lookin to go "1 tun" and 16 inch tires (on the smallest Bud wheel). I guess I'd hafta take the F250 rotor along with the rest? Some have done it, just not sure of a parts list...

I bought a '79 F-350 Supercab 4x4 off Craiglist, Tacoma area, about 5 years ago. Since I'm Canadian, I have to have it inspected up here in order to legally be able to insure it for the road.........still workin in on it! Got really busy with work when I purchased it so taking me a bit of time. I believe most of it's original other than the 460 swapped in engine and some interior parts. I have the original build sheet and bill of sale off the buyer that purchased it at the time. I believe it's a Lariat with air conditioning. Intentions are to restore it gradually. I'm pretty excited about my find!

I have been checking prices on your side of the border and DANG! No wonder so many Washington trucks end up there.

To the poster that said "Ford said the 460 had too much torque for the transfer case" that was just a final way for them to try and get a persistent customer to stop bugging them......np205 cases hold up just fine in modified first gen Cummins Dodges, which certainly have more torque than a highly smogged 79 460. Ford isnt and wasnt International Harvester, they werent in any position to build a one off, different engine option for a single customer. IH followed the medium/heavy truck build protocol where a customer could order all sorts of stuff on even a light duty truck, it kept them less competitive and they got out of the light duty line. Ford (smartly) followed what typical car makers do, you have certain options ONLY. Ive read lots of urban legends on Craigslist for sale ads " Truck was my grampa's, and he worked at a dealership and Ford specially built this F250 4x4 truck for him with a Detroit Diesel 453T and a 13 speed Road Ranger"..........Yeah, you may actually have that truck, but Ford didnt build it for you!

Regarding the D70 rear axle on F350's.....If you purchased an F350 2wd, you could have gotten single or dual rear wheels, chassis cabs, pickups of several variants up to i BELIEVE 10,000 lb GVWR, so to accommodate that weight, many if not all came with a Dana 70 rear axle. The F350 4x4 for 79 was apparently rated at 8500 lbs GVWR, which by the middle eighties would be basically a heavy 3/4 ton. Most of the 4wd F250's from the mid-late 70's were rated around 7000-7700 lbs......looking at numbers ive seen, a Dana 60 full floater rear axle is rated at somewhere around 5500 lbs max, and a fully loaded f350 4x4 at 8500 lbs is likely to be pretty close to the axles max, im guessing
