Questions about getting a 08 powerstroke

Hey everyone.... Im posting this on my dad's behalf.

He's looking at getting an 2008 F250 powerstroke but we've been reading a lot about people getting crap mileage due to the "clean diesel" and have heard there were some way's to get 16-18mpg hwy without towing by straight piping it & doing some other things to "fool" the computer... Not 100% sure what it was though.

We were curious if anyone else has done any MPG gaining mod's on their 08 powerstrokes & how much they cost...

He currently has an 04 F150 FX4 and gets about 15.5-16hwy not towing anything... so we'd like to stay there or better while towing moderate stuff with the 250.. I know it'll go down hauling 10 tons & what not... but we usually just pull mowing equipment.

Thanks!

While it is true that you can realize a good mileage increase by running turbo back straight pipe and installing a tune to fool the PCM regen software, before you attempt this you need to find out the laws in your area. Are diesel trucks inspected or are diesel tailpipes sniffed for emissions? Is this planned for your area?

Also realize this can greatly reduce the trade in/resale value of your truck.

If your gonna keep it, gut and cut off the regen if its not something you plan on keeping then get a used 7.3 no emissions stuff maybe a cat if that and you will be getting better mileage then the 6.4.

I would guess about 700$ on the cheap the custom tune and tuner would be about 5oo of that

the most common usage is the Spartan tuner, kit costs about $2,000.
there are others, cheaper, around $700-800.. SCT.. some like em, some don't..

some dealers seem to frown on tuners if there is any warranty engine issues.

Most guys who do this don't straight pipe it, they simply install a pipe that bolts in place of the DPF. The only way this works is with a tuner that will stop the PCM from initiating a regen cycle.

Also remember that simply removing the regen cycle will do very little to improve MPGs. Those running stock tune without regen report very little if any improvement in MPGs. I've done lots of research on this, it appears that in order to realize significant efficiency gains you have to run a high HP tune.

Those reporting 20+ MPGs with the spartan setup are normally running the 275 HP tune. The catch here is that if you break something it won't be covered under warranty, and these engines can cost upwards of $15K to replace if it's on your dime. I never tuned my '08 simply because I couldn't afford an engine replacement out of warranty. $15K can buy a LOT of fuel.

Stock you can expect 15-17 MPGs on an SRW truck driving 65-70 MPH on the highway.

Haha, not for awhile! Even if I wanted to nothing's available for it yet. We'll see how the first few guinea pigs fare with tuning their truck.

I suspect the 6.7L won't have the huge potential with simple tuning that the 6.4L does because of differences in the turbo system. The tubos on a 6.4L will boost to 41 PSI, whereas the turbo on the 6.7L will only go to 30 PSI. I'd be surprised if you'd be able to tune for 300 more horsepower without upgrading the turbo.
