Need Starter Help

Okay here goes I bought a 86 bronco,I figured out that its got a 302 with edelbrock intake and carb/by lookin at the tranny pan its a three speed C-6 ? The starter started sounding like it was grinding.Took it off and it looked really new but the starter teeth were wore down so I went and got another starter for the dreaded azone.Same exact starter,I told them 86 with 302 and automatic. The problem is it sounds like it is not meshing good like it needs a shim, but you cant shim a ford right? Soo is a starter for a 302 and 3 speed auto the same as a aod? If not does anyone have a part number or a way to tell the rocket scientist at a-zone what to go get me?

Flywheel may have some damage on it

I'll second Matt's suggestion. If the original starter looked to have damage to the gear, there is no guarantee that the ring gear is not damaged as well.

That was first thing I checked,I rotated engine and checked the flexplate. It looks fine.the new starter will rotate the engine but it does not sound right.Thats why i am wondering if there is a difference between starters for 302/aod and c6/302 setups.its like just the tip of the gear is touching, and i dont want to tear up the flywheel gear, thats a pita to replace.

Ah, ok... Hmmm, I don't know enough about the differences in that region of the truck but certainly someone here does.

Wrong nose cone. It's allowing incorrect meshing of the gear and the flywheel. No known solution except trial and error on starter selection. It's probably due to non-orginal engine/transmission configuration. (turn the radio up and iggy grinding)
