My '86 F 150 4X4, 5.0l EFI has been hard to start for about the last two weeeks. You crank it over & it wants to start but won't. Finally you hold the gas to the floor and it starts, runs rough for awhile untill it goes into fast idle then it runs fine. This morning it won't start at all. Checked for spark, got lots. Cranked it over for awhile and you can smell fuel but still can't start it. It doesn't matter what temperature it is, the hard starting condition persists if i'm parked on the cold street or when i'm parked in heated underground parking at work. What gives? HELP!
Checked some of the sensors today & it seemed like there was no signal from the throttle positioning sensor. So I replaced it at a mere $89.00, guess what , still won't start. I'm bleeding oval blue & greenback blood!! What's with the no start situation. I've got spark & fuel, what more does an engine want. Just for the hell of it I replaced the computer with a spare. Still no go. Help!!, The tow trucks are circling like vultures!!
Did you check the connectors? Ford are notorious for having connections come loose. The way to fix that is to disconnect the battery, pull apart just about every connector you can find, inspect for corrosion, and put back together. Also check the computer connector, and make sure none of the pins have backed out.
Put the original computer back in and try to crank it. Whether it starts or not, pull the codes.
Your truck is starting rich - holding the throttle wide open clears it. The fact that holding it open works (workED ) suggests that it's NOT a computer or injector problem, but it doesn't rule them out.
Check the vacuum line on the fuel pressure regulator - it should NOT have gasoline or even vapor inside it. Cycle the key to make sure the pump has run within the last 15min, then remove the cap from the Schrader (tire) valve on the fuel rail and press it open - fuel should spurt out. Cycle the key again and wait at least 10min before checking again to see if it leaks down.
Ya, she's got high mileage, almost 400K. I'm just going out to do some more checking now. A balmy -25C with a -30C wind chill today. Hey, at least it's sunny.:-staun
I had to hual it's carcus away today. It's a "cover the tomatoes" -38C out there with a -48C wind chill. I can't do much out there in these conditions. I suspect a timing chain failure but with the full city snow removal thing going on, I can't leave it out there & get it hooked. Either way, i'll know by Monday. Thanks for all the input guys, i'll keep ya posted as I find out.
Mil 1ion, is the lucky winner on What's Wrong With Fasteddie's Truck!! Hit the nail on the head!! The timing chain jumper a cog. Guess I should have checked it first instead of right away blaming the F.I. system. Sometimes, 'can't see the forrest for the trees. Won't be tearing down too soon though, 'cause it was scraping -50C last night!! I guess the tomato's are done now! Thank's again for the info. Any recommendations for a timing set? Might as well go double roller, I guess.
