1, 3, and 5 Injector problem

2002, F-350, 7.3 ltr.
According to the codes (read at Ford dealer) I had a bad IDM, some problem with injectors 1, 3, and 5. I suspected the IDM in the first place and ordered one. I ohmed out the injectors and got 3.4 across 6 of the eight a 3.3 and 3.2. When the truck is started it immediately runs perfect, then within a couple of seconds it runs like crap. No power. If the injectors were bad wouldn't the tests revealed that? I took the UVC harness out and inspected it. I was thinking that maybe there was a spot in it that moves when the truck is started and then begins to short to the head. It looks perfect, but who can really tell. My ODB II computer wont read my diesel and tells me there are no codes. So I can't use that to help. Is there anything else I can do? What else is there? Fuel should be no problem. We buy from the same place always and there has never been a problem with their fuel. It is a highly reputable place. So I am rejecting that idea for now. NEED HELP!!!

Truck for sale. As is where is.

ive seen a 6.0l leak air into the injector through the nozzle, would start and run fine for about 10 seconds, then 1 cyl would miss, then two, then three.

to check remove the fuel filter and disable the fuel pump and crank the engine over. if you see air bubbles you may have a leaking injector.

Well,

Ran out of time and had to take the truck to a shop. They have had it all day and said they think there is a short in the ICP circuit. What's an ICP? I authorized 3 hours of time to search out the prob. I don't want to be throwing money at this until it runs and would like to have some kind of idea as to what they are talking about. Chiltons sucks, so does Haynes. I am looking on Ebay for a real manual. Until then I'm screwed. Can anyone give me an idea of what the shop is talking about?

Scott,

You've been a member here a long time. You really should spend more time down in the 99 - 03 7.3 diesel section, or at least post questions like this down there.

ICP is the Injection Control Pressure sensor located on the front inboard side of the driver head. They either got a P1211 or a P1280 code. Be careful or they'll be trying to sell you a new HPOP next.

An easy test for the ICP sensor is to simply unplug it when the truck is running bad. If the idle smooths out, replace the sensor (takes about 5 minutes).

Based on your description, I would have guessed you'd be seeing a P1316 IDM code caused by a loose UVCH (under valve cover harness) connector. It starts up fine, then runs bad means if you ohm the injectors when the engine is cold (starts up fine), you won't see the loose connection. It's worth pulling the valve covers to shim the connector and re-torque the injector hold down bolts and rocker arm pedestal bolts anyway.

If you want a real manual, get the Ford Service DVD manual. If you don't want to fork over that much money, go to alldatadiy.com and get the same info for a yearly subscription. For even less money, drop on down to the 7.3 section and we'll help you out.

I would have, but some reason this forum came up from my bookmarks and I didn't look carefully enough before posting. Once I noticed I just left it to the moderator.
Unfortunately I didn't get codes from the dealer, just that there was a DTC for cylinders 1, 3 and 5. Doesn't help much and when I called to get the real codes I had to leave a message and wait for a call back. No call back and I ran out of weekend. What the shop is saying is that they suspect a short. WTF? I replaced the right UVC harness because I had the valve cover off and decided to take advantage and do a little shotgun trouble shooting. I sure as hell hope they don't charge me a zillion dollars to unplug the sensor and plug it back in. That would **** me off. Oh well, working 200 miles away causes a few problems, not the least of which is being able to work on a truck.
