I'm doubtful that cancer will ever be conquered even in my children's lifetimes. There's simply too much money at stake in the medical world to eradicate this killer.
I guess my naturally cynical tendencies would lead me to agree with Tim...way too many $$$ involved. It is my belief that we will eventually be able to manage many...if not all...cancers...with ever evolving and sophisticated treatments. Thus...ensuring the $$$$$$$ stream for the people involved.
Unfortunately...too late for many we know and love. Those who have passed...those who are being treated...and...those who don't even know they have cancer.

These two posts (above) hit the nail right on the head, and I couldn't agree, more.
more money in treating than healing thats for sure, but if they could come up with less radical treatment that even when successful usually leave the survivor with emotional and surgery scars they would really make the MOOLAH. People would pay to keep the cancer from coming back.
Well....At least no one chimed in with the old 'they found the cure, but the gub'mint and the big pharma is sitting on the secret so they can keep profiteering'......
I'm only being semi tongue-in-cheek here.....I've had friends tell the me same thing and get pissed when I didn't get on board with the theory......
I usually try to tell them several things:
1. No secret THAT big could possibly remain secret.
2. Try to imagine the unmasking of a conspiracy to prevent the public from finding out about an actual cure....and allowing millions to suffer and die for reasons of profit. Any individual or company found out to have been a part of that conspiracy would be under direct threat and fact of death....Period. They'd be on the run forever.
3. Try to imagine how much money the company which FOUND the cure would garner from selling the treatment. Hell, if they were smart, they'd sell the rights to produce and distribute the treatment to OTHER pharmas for a royalty and reap the neverending income......
***I'll have more later, along with my opinion. I have NOT read the link yet, but I will.
they can't even find a cure for the common cold, and we expect them to find a cure for cancer?
The cold can't be cured because it changes every year. I'm pretty sure that viruses won't be cured for a very long time, if ever. this is why we have to get a flu shot every year. Cancer probably won't be cured because I think it's a mutation in our bodies. There are so many different types of cancer, and so many things that can cause cancer, how could it be cured?
Reovirus, it is something that occurs naturally in our bodies, when used with other treatments has shown positive signs of attacking the cancer and killing it. Probably more info on it here Oncolytics
I have stocks in this company so I am hoping it does well soon.
Also in the press releases from these guys they generally never call it a cure, but a treatment, although in one of the more resent press releases the doctor did call it a cure.
A cancer cure, if ever found, will likely be, at least in part, due to research into aging.
Current therapies fight outbreaks. The cure will be in turning the body into a 'foreign-body' fighting machine that treats everything outside of the norm into an invader that needs to be destroyed. The immune system already kinda/sorta does this...but somehow cancer tricks it until it's too late. Immunotherapy is obviously a good start (and we already are researching this). This therapy will likely treat 'normal' aging the same way, and will generally extend life and health.
Stu is right on a big part of the problem being a) not every person's body is the same, and b) there are many outside influences into cancer causality, and c) cancers that are similar (lung cancers for instance) do NOT necessarily behave the same for those caused by smoking, and those that are not.
Turning the body into a super-organism (which really, it already is, but you get the drift) will be the key, I think.
These are horrendous generalities I'm making---obviously---but don't most breakthroughs start as such? There's a terrific book out there, science fiction, called 'The Apocalypse Troll' (David Weber) which has a class of humans (called 'Thuselahs'....for Methusaleh) which has a symbiote bound into their bodies....perpetuated as a dominant gene into their offspring....which was created during a bio-attack by a xenocidal alien species which attacked a human planet with an organism created to target humans. Usually 100% effective, the organism killed 99.6% of the population, but a slight mutation turned this killer organism into a symbiote which treated the body of the several thousand survivors as an organism to be protected and improved. The result was a human which didn't age or get illnesses...including cancer...because the symbiote treated all foreign bodies (outside of air, food and water, of course) as an invader to be destroyed......and the survival mechanism kept cell breakdown from aging from happening.
Fantastical, obviously.....But perhaps something similar could eventually be garnered along the lines of a annual or bi-annual booster shot which does something similar---at least in regards to disease. Regarding aging....there is interesting research being done with compounds like resveratrol, etc..
IMO, if it can be imagined....it can eventually be done. Maybe not in MY lifetime....but eventually. I have a lot of faith in the human brain. Also, IMO, the vast majority of cancers will be turned into chronic illnesses which can be indefinitely managed by 2050 or so. JMO, of course.
There are still people viewing the thread - Thats what I intended when I posted - It's an awareness thing, not a debate.
If you read the information in the origanal post it's not a Cure, it's a treatment that doesn't destroy the body the way radiation and chemo do.
