Coolant advice sought

What type of coolant is recommended for older Diesels? I have an 84 6.9IDI. Is there any merit, or disadvantage, to swapping out the coolant with the newer G05 stuff? Should I just stay with the original green?

Any horror stories to trade?

My local shop told me the red stuff eats gaskets. Not sure about that though as our 9 year old VW Jetta has had it from day one.

when you use the green stuff please, please tell me you test for sca's and run them? even though 6.9l is less prone to cavitation, still no excuse. and as for me, i love me some CAT red! its a great elc, designed by a company that knows nothing but diesels. if you cant trust them, then who can you? lol

Oreo so you run the cat red with no issues. I just didnt want to find out the wrong way that it is corrosive.

we've got 50 trucks in our fleet with 100 to 400k miles (3 idi's rest psd, cummins and cats) and never had an issue. All our mechanics swear by it and I trust them more then anyone.

Been running the red stuff for about 200 miles now. Seems like awesome stuff

I've heard it could eat silicone tape and maybe gaskets... It isn't too hard to do work on a water pump/tstat gasket if it happens. I'll be happy with my anticavitating million mile coolant

Or most places ... Hopefully you never need it in an emergency out on the road!

When dealing with products that should not be mixed, one should use products available at the regular chain stores that are on nearly every corner!

Never know when you're gonna blow a hose and need more then the jug you carry.

-Enjoy

I have to agree with that... or carry plenty of extra with you. That being said what do you recommend for coolant Festus?

well, if you blow a heater core line then your draining your whole system anyways unless you catch it quick. in that case id fill it with water til you got home then refill with coolant.
