Anyone know the rules for hood ornaments? My Ranger XLT, which one can it use? Have part #35 on the grill. Which would be the correct hood ornament, or does it matter? Was looking at #27, #28, @29, & #33. Personaly prefer #27.
#33 (wreath w/crest & 3 lions) is correct for 1973/76 (except Explorers).
#27 is a myth! You won't find it listed or pictured in any Ford truck parts catalog and/or sales brochure for any year.
It's actually C2DZ16178A = 1962/63 Falcon front fender ornament that someone discovered fits the hood profile of certain year trucks.
The repro parts sellers are passing this off as a factory accessory. It was not! And besides that, it's illegal to install it on anything newer than a 1969.
A US law passed in 1970 said that hood ornaments could no longer have sharp edges and had to be spring loaded.
1973/76 F100/350 (except Explorers): The original hood ornament was D3AZ16850A - same as 1973/76 LTD's.
In 1977, D3AZ16850A was replaced by D7OZ16850B (same as 1977 LTD II-not LTD!).
In 1978, D7OZ16850B was replaced by D8BZ16850A (same as 1978/81 Fairmont).
In 1982, D8BZ16850A was replaced by E2BZ16850A (1982/83 Fairmont).
The Fairmont hood ornaments are shorter and shaped differently than the originals.
TexasTrash: Remove the ornament, look on its underside for any numbers and symbols (that reflect, for examples: GM or DDCP aka MoPar).
AFAIK, it's not from any year Ford vehicle. It resembles the 1952/55 accessory Studebaker car/truck hood ornaments. A Studebaker number will have 6 digits beginning with 3 (car) or 6 (truck).
Thanks ND, that was what i was looking for. The Ford Crest is a favorite of my son and me. He collects crests and logos of cars and we just like the older family crest.
I was thinking #33 was right for our truck. Thanks so much for the info, you do us all a great deal of good sorting out the disinformation.
Hey, on this same subject, NumberDummy, maybe you'll know - should a '79 F-250 Ranger have a hood ornament, and if so, which one?
My '79 has a hood ornament mount, but the ornament is missing. I'd like to put something there at some point. My last truck was an Explorer and had the Explorer emblem.
Thanks,
Sean

Wow. never knew that was a law... there sure are a lot of vehicles running around with after market ornaments that are illegal. Good to know tho, considering what one of my trucks is planned to get... Bull horns.

Lot of interesting info here. I don't think I've personally ever seen a 73-79 truck with a hood ornament other than an Explorer.
What ornament would the 79 F-250 Ranger mentioned above have? Or is it not pictured?

G.
insurance lndustry lobbied for it to become law after many pedestrians were getting mauled by them in car accidents.
