So fortunately for me, this truck sat for several years before I got it and I haven't been driving it all that much so I hope I haven't hurt anything. But going through the fluids this afternoon, I checked the transmission, and all was well. I then checked the transfer case, and couldn't get a reading on my finger. So I headed to Oreilly's and got two quarts of Mercon along with a pump. I pumped the first quart and still couldn't get a reading on my finger! Dang! So I started pumping the second quart and was waiting on back flow from the filler hole and never got it. I do have a reading now with my finger just inside the filler hole, but it must have been bone dry since the capacity is 2 quarts! I'm going to drive it to work tomorrow so I'll see if I come out and find a puddle under the truck, I'll have some work to do over the weekend...
That sucks! I'm glad that didn't happen to me. The mechanic that looked the truck over when I bought it didn't check it like he said he did! That's what make me mad. But that is a lesson I won't let get by me again, thats for sure!
There was no charge, which probably should have been the first clue that he didn't really look it over. It was one of those "friend of a friend" things. I'm really surprised more than anything else that it didn't fall out on the road. These things are tough!
It is leaking a little bit. I would say after it gets hot, it leaks a puddle about the size of a silver dollar. But since it was sitting for 3 years, it had time to leak all the way out. How hard is it to pull it and replace the seals? Can I do it in my driveway or should it be done by a professional?
The output seals are fairly easy. Just drain the fluid and replace the old seals. The housing gasket is a bit tougher. You have to split the case, get it clean, then install a new gasket with a thin butter of RTV.
