I'm wanting to paint the upper front bumper on my 07 F150. I am changing the look to chrome and silver from all black.(have a Lariet honeycomb/chrome grill too) I have a chrome bumper and when I have all the parts off the truck I'm going to paint the top piece silver. I checked with several body shops and they are askin $200-$300 to paint this piece! So... I was thinking of buying some automotive paint in rattle cans and doing it myself. The part is in good shape so I figure a light sanding so the paint adhears then 3-4 coats of the silver. Then rattle can clear coat. Do you guys think I could get a good result this way? Should I wet sand with 2000 or 3000 between coats? Thanks.
You lost me on whether or not the piece you want to paint is chrome. If it is regular painted steel, then your method is ok, but if it is chrome, then you will have troubles.
As far as rattle canning, I would scuff lightly, then put 2 coats of primer, 2-4 coats of paint and 2 coats of clear. I would wet sand with 800 to smooth imperfections. Finally, if you want, wet sand a buff the clear, but be careful not to burn through as rattle clear is thin.
Thanks for the advice. It's the top piece on the front. It is plastic/rubber type of stuff. The chrome bumper I mentioned is to replace the black steel bumper that is on there already.
