I've got a question regarding rust on the floor of my truck. My vehicle is a '79 Ford F-100 Ranger, 300 straight-6, C6 transmission. What I need to know is... what is the best way to remove rust from the floor? I removed the vinyl flooring today and there was rust in the cab where water got under the foam padding. It's generally all over the floor. The best spot is where the hump in the middle is.
My idea is to take a wire wheel and throw it on a side grinder and wire brush the floor, put JB weld in the small holes that have rusted through to close them up, and primer the floor.
Would this be good, or is there a better way? It's not un-repairable, per say.
pics would help...but i've seen everything from licence plates to road signs...on my 77 chevy luv i had someone use kool seal..like for mobile home roofs
you could just cut out the rusted areas and then make some patch panels and then weld them in. and then undercoat and seal it up again. I think that would be the best way to go. besides buying a whole new floor.
POR 15 is the way to go here if the rust hasn't made its way through the floor. It's kind of on the spendy side but it has seemed to work for many people before. Follow the directions and you should be set.
What im doing... i got a few squares of sheet metal from lowes, gasket maker/sealant, and some rubber undercoating spray. I just going to cut out the bad parts of the rust, fit the metal to the floor, put a sealer around the holes i cut out, then rivit the sheet metal in, and spray it down with rubber undercoating sealer on both sides.
Ive got antique tags so no inspection anyways but hitting a puddle sucks bad when you arent thinkin about it, haha
First of welcome to ford truck enthusiasts. lots of great info and lots of good people.
Me and a buddie just did this to his 64 chevy and what we did was clean up the rust with a wire wheel and the we primed and painted it. Once that was all done we made a cardboard template of the spots we wanted to cover. then we transfered that on to some sheet metal and then welded in into place. We figured that it wouldnt week the structure and give it just a little more help. We think it turend out great.
Just an idea though, keep us updated and let us know what u end up doin. Pics are always great.
Thanks all for the responses, you guys are a great bunch.
I think I'm going to just go with what thefordlane said. And his plan works out well because I have access to some sheet metal that could make a new home on the floor.
While we're on the topic of rust... How many pieces is the truck bed made out of? The truck belonged to my relative and he used it in a lawn care business. The truck had 3 inches of dirt in the bed when I got it. Fortunately, it hasn't rusted through, so it might get a wirewheel and some primer too. My main concern is the piece up next to the cab, opposite of the tailgate. It was hit with what looked like a mower and rubs against the cab, and the large gap at the bottom turned into a rust haven.
Stuff I've looked at online says the bed is five or six pieces. LH side, RH, tailgate, front of the bed, then the floor.
