Sounds like both could be separate problems. Have you checked the speakers for the wires being plugged in fully? I've had one speaker come unhooked and ground out and sound would go away but the radio held power. I've also had speakers ground out on the gas tank (had two speakers in the middle of the seats) so I would check with that if they're mounted somewhere that they could ground out.
For the engine just "switching off" have you made sure that all the wires are all tight against the coil? I was having intermittent starting and running problems with a loose coil wire.
Also, when the sound goes off does it make a pop or go silent?
John,
Me and a few of the guys will be holding an all night prayer vigil down at the shop in hopes that the powers that be will drive out the foul demons from your wiring harness.
Glory to God! Thank You Jesus. I'm down with that. You think I ought to apply anointing oil?
Scifi266, The speakers slowly go out and back on sometimes slowly, sometimes like today rapidly. Just off & on no popping. Coil wires are snug.
I go out to start the truck this morning and move it to the shade. I hit the switch and it turns over a few times, I pump the gas it fires up runs a few seconds and off like a light. Re-fire it revving to about 2200 rpms 5 or so seconds off like a light. Fire it a third time, put it in gear and 15 ft. it shuts off. Re-fire it holding about a 2500 idle for 20-30 seconds move it farther forward and back up 25 ft.
The only thing I know to do now is try unplugging and re-connecting connections.
A couple days ago I drove it on a 40 mile trip. It shut off several times while it was cold but once I got it running on the road it stayed running.
So it is acting up more when it's cold this week. Not so a couple weeks back.
honestly, sounds like a grounding problem. Out like a light would seem like it hits the ignition, though you said you checked it. Try it with lights on when it dies and see what happens to them. Do you have a good engine to body ground?
Well I thought so. I do have a project of adding more grounds around the truck that I know I will get around to one day. I owned a 92 for a short period a few years back and couldn't believe the ground straps all over the truck.
What makes it hard to find is it's not like a bad idle that you can adjust out. It'll be running just fine and shut off, sometimes it will re-fire very quickly, other times not. You never know how long it will run. I will knock off in the yard or 2 miles down the road.
It does seem that once it passes a point (that is not the same) it runs with no problem. Morning runs seem to be close to home, afternoon further away.
With the tach jumping around the other day, I'm with power supply to the coil.
Thanks for the input.
The temps should be coming down here a bit next week so I will be more inclined to work on it.
Took the truck on a 25 mile round trip job today. Drove it about 5 miles out and it shut off, I don't have neutral safety switch engaged so while still rolling I bumped the starter and it re-fired.
Coming back 3 1/2 hours later and in site of where it shut off outbound it shut off again. I turned the switch off and back on and it caught and drove home.
I may pull the switch next week spray it down good with WD40 and re-attach it.
