Does high elevation cause regen issues?

Hi,

I recently moved from VA to CO. My house in VA sat at 10feet above MSL and my house in CO sits at 9400feet above MSL. Since moving to CO and being at this altitude, my truck is almost always in regen or I get the "drive to clean filter" message. It is so bad that I am thinking about taking it to the dealership in CO Springs to have them look at it.

Right now I would say that 3/4 of a my time I am spent in regen or the "drive..." message. This is over about 8 tanks of fuel. Also, my mileage went from averaging 16 combined to around 9. I know high altitude will lower mileage but this is due to the regens.

I am tempted to drop the DPF alltogether but I don't want to do that until the warranty is out.

Thoughts?

Dave.

I think you have something wrong here. I was in Colorado this summer for a week or so. I was at 8700 feet and climbed to 12,000 several times and never had a problem with regens. I am sure there will be several that will jump in here that are from Colorado and you will get their experiences.

Thanks Gear. I think something is up with it as well.

Has anyone experienced a clogged DPF?

I'm in Colorado right now, went over a 11000 foot pass today, if anything it seems like I'm seeing less regens than normal...I think you should get your truck checked..

I am in Santa Fe, altitude 7000 ft... I dumped my DPF/CAT at 400 miles, but my truck used to go into Regen about once a week at this altitude. As far as your mileage goes, I was averaging between 9-12 mpg with the DPF on. So your mileage seems about right, but you probably need to get the Regen problem looked at...

I was all around the springs and stuff this summer as well. Even going up to pikes peak, eagle or San Juan Nat Forest I didn't regen any different.

I think you may have a sensor or two out of spec.

I am going to take it to Phil Long Ford in CO Springs for them to look at.

Has anyone had experience with them?

Please, let us know what they find. I was also out there this summer and I did have a couple strange regens. And, my mileage was bad but I attributed it to the hard tows over those passes.

I'm in the Denver metro area, most of my driving is around the 5,800 ft level. I bought my 2008 in late June. I'm getting about 12 MPG (hand calculated) around town. I get Regens around 100 to 150 miles. They seem to be further apart after I started using Motorcraft Cetane additive every fill. I've heard good things about Diesel Kleen as well and might try that.

I've been to Phil Long in Denver a couple of times and heard good things about them from others, don't know much about their lot in the Springs.

Thanks Guys.

I called the service manager (Clayton) and described it to him. He said to bring it. He said that they have seen turbos leak oil which can clog or affect the DPF. He also said that they have a two back log on diesel trucks.

I will take it in on Monday and let you guys know what happens.

You can pull your lower CAC hose off and check for oil. That is easier then pulling the downpipe.

Update: After driving my truck around all weekend, it constantly went into regen 20 miles out of coming out of it. Yes, only 20miles between regens.

I took it to Phil Long Ford and explained what is happening to a Service Manager. His first question was if the oil was recently changed, which it had. He said that overfull oil can be siphoned into the exhaust causing regens. This is def not the case for me.

He should be calling me today with their findings. I will report back.

Which Phil Long in the springs did you go to? Motor City or Chapel Hills? I went to the Motor City location with similar issues and had John Woody (Service Advisor) inform me that all is normal. I am now ready to chop off the DPF. However I am curious to know what you find out.
