I would like to put in dual exh., and was wondering about routing. My side tank prevents me from routing up at frame height on driver's side. Has anyone put both tubes on passenger side, and then crossed over to have one exit on driver's side, and one on passenger side? Does it look cheesy to have one or both tubes visible beneath frame?
I've got a F-100 4x4 but the situation was nearly the same - only I was dealing with the transfer case. From the headers, the driver's side crosses over the goes down the right frame rail. I tucked the tubes above the lower frame line until it angles down to go below the frame and exit the side. Here's a thread with pics:
On my 76 F-100 I have the dual exhaust routed over to the passenger side where they go to two Magnaflows that sit between the drive-line and the frame, then go up over the rear axle and exit under the rear bumper on both sides.
My '77 F150 4x4 has the left side pipe routed over to the right where it used to cross over to join the right, only now it does not join. Then two 2-1/4" pipes run parallel rearwards between the trans and right side frame rail past the transfer case where the left side pipe then crosses back over to the left and two mufflers under the front of the bed, one on the left, one on the right of the driveshaft .... then the tail pipes go back over the rear axle out to the rear.
bump to orangejuice,my trucks are all ran that way up the pass side as i also have the d/s fuel tank 1 thing to watch out for when your muffler man is installing the cross over to the driver side by the axle make sure he leaves clearance between the pipe and the duel gas tank selenoid mounted on the rear cross member the guy doing mine had to bend the pipe 3 times till i was happy [hot exaust pipe by rubber fuel lines not a good thing]

OJ
mine are the same, but both exit on the passenger side aft of the rear wheel.
Having NEW exhaust run on my '78 F100 as I am typing this...I have a transplanted 351W, decided to stay with the manifolds, but they are going straight as possible out the rear, with an "H" pipe, and Chrome Tips...They are going to be 2" pipes with Flowmasters...can hardly wait to get it back this afternoon...hopefully it will be A LOT quieter than the "patched up" original exhaust that was on it...
i know the feeling well the scs i just bought has leaking manifold gaskets [both sides] due to broken bolts/burnt gaskets wore out bluebottle mufflers hate driveing it like this but i need to pull the 460 and drill/tap the bolts and will be doing a minor rebuild as well but yes loud in this case is not proud
Our 78 250 has dual that my dad had put on cheap at a Midas or similar years ago..(early 90s IIRC) Just recently have themufflers burned out enough for it to sound good.
The left pipe crosses over under the oil pan as if to a Y pipe for single exhaust, but then they run parallel pretty much straight back just inside and a little below the frame. Goes to twin cheap glass packs(that are welded together) just under the front of the bed, and then straight back, bump for the axle, and both do a side exit behind the right rear wheel. I'd like the change it to exit on both sides, someday.
It sounded Fabulous after the rain going down between bed and cab rusted out the top pipe... so i had straight pipe only for that bank, and a burned out glass pack on the other one... But ran terrible with un-equal back pressure between banks.
I'm working on my daughter's 76 F250 4wd. Just installed new Headman Headers #89120 and now installing Hooker mandrel bent dual exhaust #16562HKR. Drivers side exhaust crosses over to the passenger side then splits off and goes back to the drivers side near the rear end. I'm still working on getting the exhaust hung - the weather hasn't been coorperating and I'm doing this outside as my shop is already full. I think it is going to fit nicely when I'm done and will be a huge improvement over the rusted out junk that was on it when she bought the truck!
