302 rebuild, trying to get a handle on costs

Ok, I have probably bugged everybody enough with posts for my 302 V8. It has been 15 years since I did anything with old cars and so the prices are nowhere what they used to be (what is?). Here's what I want to do, I am looking for what would be the ballpark figure in parts alone for a rebuild for this motor from crank to carb. Since this engine had an oil leak, I can't trust any of the parts in it, even though it runs, I don't know how bad they might be. I want to replace the valves of course, and maybe a mild cam. I also want to replace the water pump and the timing chain and update the distributor. I also want to add a carb, thinking an edelbrock 600 CFM. Can anyone figure what a ballpark idea in parts might be (not worried about labor just yet) for the whole thing. It doesn't have to be exact since I am going to figure high anyway.

Yes $1500 is a good ballpark for a rebuild. However I'd suggest you simply buy rebuilt or low milage used heads rather than spend money on the ones you have, it's cheaper in the long run believe it or not.

I think you would be betteroff finding a good running '98-'00 Explorer with a bad tranny or ? for use as a donor. Just use the long block and your distributor, intake and the other needed parts. Better parts, tighter tolerances and nearly the best heads, also a roller cam. It adds up to more power for less money.

Another couple of possibilities

PAW. Performance Auto Warehouse. Check their prices. If you can put it together and you know what you're doing this is a good way to go.

Car-parts.com You can find very good engines on here fairly cheap. I have used them before. I found a 351w (a strong motor) for $500 from there.
