Lewis, please include the year in your posts..I suggest you buy a factory shop manual, original or reproduction,as the first item you purchase for your truck.

As Steve mentioned, there are wiring diagrams in the Shop Manual. And if you are doing a restoration, you can't do it without that manual. The year is important because different years have different wiring configurations.

I'm assuming that this is the 55 F250 that is in your "User Profile." If it is, I probably have something that's easier to follow that you can use.

But there is still other info we need to know:

1. Are you still running the original 6 Volt electrical system?

2. Is your signal switch built into your steering column, or strapped on?

3. If it's a strap on does it have 3, 5, or 7 wires?

4. If it is 12 volt, where are you distributing power? IE, where does the wire from your generator or alternator go to?

5. Did it have working signal lights previously?

Let us know that stuff and we can see waht we can get for you.

1. It's been converted to 12v, has a 12v battery and alternator.

2. Turn signal switch is built into the steering column

4. I'll find out and post tommorrow...can't see in the dark

5. I dont know if the signals worked prior. I bought it a couple of weeks ago
and assumed that they did at some point. At this moment the parking lights come
on (if I remember right) with the headlights. The tail lights do not get brighter when I
step on the brakes. I would think that by '55 the cars had both brake & signal
lights, right?

I will post the alternator info later tommorrow.

Thanks again

On trucks, rear turn signal lights were an option even on some of the '57 to '60s.

If there's any original bullet connectors in use, those often become corroded. As can the contacts in lamp sockets. Scraping clean, and daubing with a little electrical grease (to prevent corrosion recurring) should work. Original wires can get brittle and break. You pretty much have to track it down with a test lamp or voltmeter. A "fox and hound" signal tracer wouldn't hurt either when tracing mystery wires, if you can borrow one (or a techie or electrician friend). Unless the truck was rewired by a real pro, anything is possible.

Well, if it's been converted to 12 volt then there's no telling what theperson who converted it did to it.

Normally on the 55 the headlight switch contained 2 circuit breakers and was used for hot power distribution - they were for 6 volt power.

There is a terminal post onteh headlight switch that runs a wire down to the brake light switch on the back of the master cylinder, which then came back up to the turn signal switch - from there out to the lights.

There's a coupel key points: First turn signals were optional even though the switch was installed and th ewiring was in the harness. There was a kit used to install them the instructions showed which wires to unplug on the standard set up and which ones from the kit to plug into them.

Second, the lights in the back have two filiments. One is for the running lights, the other is for both brake and signal lights. The signal switch split up the brake light power to flash the back lights when selected, or, shine both at the same time not flashing.

Here's a drawing of the OEM wiring for the 55-57 lights. It shows the flow for front adn rear lights and signals. The wire colors are correct as shown.

I'm not sure it will help, but it's a start and shows how the flow should go.

But as I said, there's no telling where you power distribution is now (fuse panel?) or where power is being run off of to supply the brake lights.
