Transmission ID website?

Now that I have the c4 tranny out of my 1978 f100, I see where the case fill plug has been plugged, and it is now pan fill...which means this tranny was not the original one the truck came with. The tranny does have a casting number/code on the case. is there a webiste I can look at to figure out what this tranny came out of?...thanks, Ben

Sorry Ben, it's been hectic around here.
First off these really aren't ID numers.
There should be a Buck tag on the tranny (like on the rearend) that would help with ID.

Those number just confirm that it was desinged for a 79 Large Ford Car with a couple of change-ups.

The CFC # is probably an Assembly or Casting Plant code number.

Keep searching for a *PJA* type number on a tag.

Transmission ID website?

Dennis,

I just went out and checked.....I couldn't find any tags any where. the only other numbers I could find were these: 9U104779. the last digit may be a 9 or 0....these numbers are stamped into the case, looks like by hand, maybe. Also there was a huge 23A on the case, looks like it might have been cast in when the casting was poured....not sure if this helps or not, but that is all the numbers I can find....thanks, Ben

I know I am resurrecting a dead thread, but no one told the OP what the 9U104779 number meant.

So, for future reference that number is the last 8 digits of the VIN of the original car as it came from the factory. Basically, it was installed in a 1979 Ford vehicle of some sort.

9U are the first two digits of the partial Passenger Car VIN (1960/80: the complete VIN contains 11 digits). In this thread > >

9 = 1979 / U = Louisville KY Assembly Plant // The last 6 digits of the VIN is the Numerical Sequence of Assembly, the cars specific serial number.

D9AP-7976-AA is the casting number for the C4 converter housing: 1979 LTD/Grand Marquis 302 w/a C4.

C4/C6: The TRANS ID tag is bolted to the servo cover on the left side of the transmission case. By now, many of these tags are missing.

I didn't join FTE until 11/2006, so I never read this 2/2003 thread until today.. Dennis (Mil1ion) passed away about 4 years ago.
