Numbers look pretty consistent on the injectors. I'll wait to hear what the infra red shows.

FYI, you could always take the fuel pump off this truck and throw it on the Excursion to get you by for now. Or I guess we could wait and use the Ex for spare parts to test different things out on this truck.

OK I'm back. I used my motorcycle to go back and forth to work and it broke down. The battery was old and it quit almost at a stealership. It was 15 minutes before closing and no other place around. So I had to pay a fortune for a battery.

Anyway I had time tonight to start the truck. After about 15 minutes I checked the exhaust manifold temps. Drivers side 210. Passenger side about 95. It sounds really bad so I didn't want to keep running it. I assume I have to pull it apart tomorrow. How can the ohms be good and the temps be off?

Also I have to fix my expedition. Where is a good place to go for a fuel pump? How much should it cost?

A bunch of wires and computers are involved. Combine that with a bunch of shade tree mechanics and you sometimes get odd things that don't make sense yet.

When you pull the valve cover, check the wiring connection first, then start the truck and see if any of the injectors are spitting oil as it runs. If the injector is firing, there will be an oil discharge coming out of the injector at the discharge spout. If none of the injectors are spitting oil, then you either have a very unusual situation where 4 injectors on one side only failed at once, or the IDM is shutting down that bank.

You could try shutting the engine off and disconnecting the batteries for a few minutes. While disconnected, unplug one injector on that side. Hook the batteries back up and start up the truck. Do the other 3 injectors start spitting oil and the truck sounds a little better? If not, shut it off, disconnect the batteries, plug the first injector back in and unplug the next one and repeat the process to rule out one injector fault causing the IDM to shut the bank down.

I got mine from NAPA, but that was more a matter of convenience than anything else. Been fine for the last 100k plus miles.

I imagine I will have a lot pulled off the engine to get the valve cover off. Will it be ok to run it that way?

Any fuel pumps to avoid?

On my truck i use the Airtex E2236 fuel pump available from Autozone, Advance Auto, or Oreillys for about $150.
I went through a couple of bosch pumps. Currently on my first Airtex. I purchased a second Airtex as a back up.

Not really too much to move getting the passenger valve cover off. The intercooler tube will come out, then tie the heater hoses up and out of the way and you're good. (Don't twist up the dipstick tube getting the bolt loose)

You'll be fine to run it for a quick test like this unless your in the middle of a dust storm.

Good news and bad news. The good news is that I got everything apart after I got back from work without breaking anything or any blood letting. The bad news is that the plugs were both in tight. I started it up and all the injectors are spitting oil. Since the covers are off, I will cut some quarters and torque the bolts before I put it back together. Do I have to check the injector torque?

What else could be wrong? If I remember right in one of my ambulances there was something behind the alternator we had to replace that made it run bad. ICP? IPR?Don't remember exactly. But I think we pulled the plug off and ran the engine and it ran better without it connected.

You're referring to the IPC sensor that you unplugged before. Front inboard side of the drivers head.

If all the injectors on the passenger side were spitting oil, then it's temp should be more inline with the driver side. Did you think to double check the infra red temps once you verified the plugs were tight and the injectors were discharging oil?

I didn't get it all back together yet. I will check the temps again. It might have been that I had a good straight shot at the drivers side manifold but it was on a big angle trying to hit the passenger side. Can I check it with just the valve covers on?

Can it be the ICP? How about fuel pressure? I would hate to think I have two vehicles with bad fuel pumps at the same time.

I would check the fuel pressure just to be sure ,that's the first thing I thought of reading all of this.

I have a fuel pressure gauge for gas. Will that work? And where does it get hooked up?

UPDATE- I put in the quarters and torqued everything and put it all back together. Right now it seems to work fine. I am not sure what happened, but as long as it works I am good to drive to work tomorrow. Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.

SOS - Bad news. My truck ran great for about 20 miles. I stopped for coffee, and when I came out the truck started to act up again. I managed to limp home. This is the way it happened the first time. I made a stop and when I started up again the problem started. Does anybody have any suggestions? This morning it was running fine. Last night too. Fuel issues? Pump? Filter? Where can I check the fuel pressure, and can I use a gauge for gas?

I am heading for work on my bike again. At least it is not raining.

The joy of intermittent electrical gremlins.

Let's back up to your earlier comment about the passenger side not running hot base on the thermometer. Lets find out if that is still going on when the engine is running poorly. If so, you'll need to pull the valve cover and watch the injectors when the engine is running poorly. If it starts to idle right, then everything will work and you won't be able to find anything.

A quick and easy test would be next time it acts up, unplug the connector on the outside of the passenger valve cover and see if the truck runs any worse or stays the same.

How often has it been raining? Could you have gotten water in the IDM?

I hate gremlins.
It has not been raining much at all, and the truck was parked when it did. So I would rule that out. I checked the temps and they are both about equal. It was already dark when I got home so I couldn't do much. I will look more in the morning. I do remember hearing some kind of whistle on the way home. I have to look when the sun comes up. The weather is good and I love riding the cycle so I am ok for tomorrow. And I am saving a lot of fuel. I will post back after I can see better. I will take it for another ride early to see how it is.
