Got my glow plug switch hooked up and the glow plugs still don't work, the light never came on, and the relay never clicked, so what else could it be?
here's how I hooked it up just to make sure I did it right :
ran a wire from the positive battery terminal to one side of the switch and then ran a wire from the other side of the switch to the glow plug relay
does that sound about right?
also on a side note my oil cooler is leaking like a sieve and has filled my oil with coolant so I have to get that fixed and do a flush then an oil change.
I would have to see a wiring diagram, if there is one thing i know, all of our trucks are different. Maybe a pic? What kind of system do you have installed?
As for the oil cooler, the rebuild kit is cheap and somewhat easy. just orings and a gasket really.

It's the old style glow plug system.
as for the oil cooler it's not so much the price as it is the PITA it is to do......jacking up the engine just doesn't sound fun
you dont have to jack the engine up bud. i didnt and took my cooler off and put it on 5 times (stupid faulty O ring) just take the filter off, unbolt the 1 10mm bolt from the steering shaft and push the shaft up and out of the way. rock the top of the cooler back twards the wheel and shimmy the cooler back. easiest way to do it is to remove the inner fender rubber splash guard so you can get your hands right in there. make it even easier you can remove the tire so you got plenty of room to root around.
So you did a manual setup to eliminate the old style? Which post did you attach to on the relay? Now that should be throwing 12V at the plugs so make sure you monitor the amount of time on.

Yeah, my old controller was crap so that's why I went with the switch, and it was the one with the purple wire on it.
I just don't know why it's not working
BTW the glow plug relay is new just in case anyone was wondering.
You need to check the voltage on the Glow Plug side of the relay (large terminal with two orange wires and one black/pink) ... Are you getting 12v+ when you push your button.
Then check the Chassis harness to Engine harness connector, it's an 8 wire connector with two heavy gauge orange wires on one edge of the connector, one is orange/white the other is orange/ltgreen, the connector for those two wires melts.
Gotta go down sometime today and work on it some more, I had planed on checking all the glow plugs and the harness today, I can already bet I'll have some bad glow plugs.
And thanks for the info Festus on how to check the relay, if I find out that my NEW relay is bad you can bet some heads will roll at the parts store
As for the oil cooler mess I'm going to change my oil and see if I get any coolant in the oil again before I mess with the oil cooler, I'm thinking the coolant I'm finding in the oil might be from the bad head gasket it had.....time will soon tell.
Well I went down today and drained my oil and holy **** my oil was thicker than paint and it had almost a 2 quarts of water/antifreeze mixed with it, made it a nice gray color, and while I was at it I took a look at my oil cooler and it was caked with dried grease and oil, so I guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and rebuild my oil cooler, doesn't look that hard to take off though.
I'm in the middle of replacing one right now, Oreo suggested a while back to take the steering shaft out, so I opted for that route. I also popped the front left tire off, and the little plastic inner fender cover that hides the steering box and lines. Going this way, at least on mine, with extensions and a swivel joint, I was able to undo the front header bolts from the wheelwell.
The rear header I did from underneath, and once undone, twisting it and dropping it down through the area the filter would be worked nicely.
I found this thread doing a search on the appropriate coolant to use. I'm glad I read it. I'm planning on working on my oil cooler too. I don't know if it needs anything more than a gasket. But, I'm glad to have found some of the tips here. I actually just changed out my steering gear and steering shaft over Labor Day weekend. So, I'm familiar with that part. I didn't take the wheel off or inner fender. Although, I can see how it would probably make things easier.
