Ok, history is...truck ran good until Stepson ran it out of fuel... changed fuel filter and truck ran same...used truck cause could not afford to put out of service. Always hesitant with throttle and smoked at idle. I figured these symptoms were because of clogged injectors...I tried What the truckers do by putting trans. fluid in fuel, but this is in the past and did not help. I periodically check and bleed for water in the fuel...no changes. Truck seems louder... the knock, definitely hear it more with the windows open. One day last week, running about 2500 rpm on highway it got a really loud knock and major loss of power...I tried to make it off the high way....the knock would go away and then come back again....Then of course it died completely. Still can crank over but notta. Anyone got ideas where to begin??
The loud knock you herd driving is more then likely an injector sticking. Although that shouldn't cause shut down.
We do however need a bit more info. How many miles on the truck? Do you have tuner? Is your SES light on? If so did you get the codes read and what are they? Also what kind of air filter are you running? And when was your last oil change?
I'd check your fuel pressure. It probably sucked crud into the screens in the tank when run to empty killing your pressure. Yes, there are screens in there -- most of us here remove them and install a filter pre fuel pump to keep that from happening ever again. That mod also makes priming the system a little easier, and if you do fuel cross-over mod (eliminating the dead-head feed), you can prime the entire system with a few turns of the key instead of forcing air through the injectors, which is never good.
