2100 Carb question...

My truck has a light hesitation at first throttle opening. I have traced it to a slow accelerator pump. Seems the actuator rod is connected to a spring loaded lever on the throttle linkage. Instead of full pump at throttle movement, it actuates kind of slowly. I checked the alignment etc and it seems alright. I even lubed the plunger and the linkage.

Anyone got any wisdom here? Do i need to rework the spring? Can i make it solid? Would i want to? Can i fix it by bending the actuator rod?

I have worked on carbs for years, never had this problem before ever.

I just went and checked this on my Galaxie's 2100 and the over-travel lever (the item on the throttle shaft to which the pump actuator rod connects) moves exactly in phase with the throttle lever. It's not clear to me what would cause the two to decouple, other than the spring wearing out. Does the over-travel lever seem loose? Can you move it back and forth freely against the throttle lever? It seems like you're on the right track.

The accelerator pump's primary adjustment is the volume of the shot delivered - this is adjusted by securing the actuator rod to one of four available positions on the over-travel lever on the throttle shaft. This won't affect the timing of the pump and I don't recommend adjusting it as a band-aid fix to your problem. I also do not recommend bending the actuator rod.

Spring wearing out is exactly what i was afraid of. I will try and see if there is a problem with it not moving free. I have not seen this problem before but then again, this carb was way dirtier on the outside than anything i have ever done.

My power steering pump & hose were leaking for years it seems (po ignored problem for years) and the atf was blown all over the engine compartment. Took three trips with pressure washer so far to get rid of the carbon build up on everything and am still finding small areas that need yet another wash down! I had to soak the carb in seafoam and take a tooth brush and a small wire brush to it to get the carbon off the outside of it. ATF had dried and solidified on everything. I did the initial cleaning of the carb outside with a pressure washer, EVEN PREMIUM CARB CLEANER WAS NOT CUTTING IT AT ALL!!!

Will rework the spring and shaft to see if there is some reason why it wont move freer.

thanks.

My understanding is that it should not move freely, but instead should be tight against the rest of the throttle shaft. If it moves around freely, I'd suspect that the spring is worn out as you also suspect. If the over-travel lever moves freely and isn't tight with the throttle lever, then it would make sense that the throttle lever has to move a few degrees before the over-travel lever moves with it.
