I'm planning on changing my fuel tank this weekend in the '84. It has been leaking for a while so I orded one of those new Fangled Polypropolene Tanks with new mounting hardware. Is there anything special I need to do when changing them?? It is a side mount tank. Also, it says because the tank is plastic you have to ground the sending unit if it doesn't have a ground wired into it. Will I have to on mine or not??
I can't think of anything special, except use "Camper Mounting Tape" between the tank & support straps, and plan on running the ground. Also, use Anti-Seize lubricant when you reassemble it. If it didn't come with a new O-ring for the sending unit, get one.
Thanks a bunch. I am going to use cut rubber strips out of old inner tubes and glue them to the straps and the frame with RTV. The new tank came with a new mounting ring and gasket so I'm good to go there. On the ground, Should I just run a wire from one of the sending unit retaining bolts to one of the tank straps. Would that work ok??
Run the ground to the frame, but there are no bolts on the sending unit - only a lock ring. You can see it in pics #44 & 45 here. Yours will be slightly smaller than that one, and it won't have wires like that, but the lock ring is similar.
I meant on the new tank. Instead of the lock ring that screws in like the old one the one on my new plastic tank is held down by 8 screws. Another thing, the old sending unit was rusted REALLLLLY bad so I had to go to ford and get a new one. $116!! Ouch and I can't drive it to school for 4 days. Really missin the sound of my Flowmasters
