Exhaust Tip Question

I've got dual exhaust on my truck, and I was wondering if there was a way to keep the tips looking as good as they did when they were brand new. They are stainless steel, and up here in the rainy Washington weather and all the sand they put down on the roads on icy mornings, they tend to get very dirty, and when I clean them off they seem to be a little more beat up every time (chips and grime that just won't come off.) So I was wondering if there were some kind of product or technique that would make them last.

Exhaust Tip Question

I hear ya Fordman!

We get it bad sometimes. My 3" tip is only 2 weeks old and it is showing the wear. Though I did not get the stainless as of yet, way to $$ for now. Just be glad we are here in Seattle and not back East somewhere right now. We can still drive, or should I say, swim around.

If it is a true stainless tip, then you can use a little bit of comet and it will clean up nicely. At least that is what the exhaust guy told me. It works on a stainless sink, so why wouldn't it?? I would follow that up with some good metal polish, like mother's or eagle.
I have also used some tarnish remover made for silverware. It works really, really good, but is also too expensive to use often. I will look around and see if I can find the tube so I can give you the name.

Exhaust Tip Question

I have an 85 Mustang GT with the original factory stainless pipes, and use nothing but Comet to clean them.
Put a little on an old sponge with a small amount of water and just scrub until they are clean.
If you wash them every time you wash the truck, they will not need the "Strong Comet cleaning" every time.
Works for me!

Never tried the comet, may give that a try.

Fordman, thanks for the comment, I am pretty fond of her myself. I have not found the polish yet. I do seem to remember it being a "TR- something.......... Also there is one called "Gleen" or "Gleem" something like that.

Try coating them with a good carnuba wax. Keeps aluminum from corroding, should do the same for stainless. If it doesn't burn off first.
