Hey im new here but just picked up a 1982 f150 4x4 today with a 300 IL truck runs good but i am wanting to put my 360 in it from my 2wd drive truck both are 4spd on the floor and i was just wondering how hard this swap is and what i am going to need the 360 is currently in a 72 but was origanlly in a 76 long story short tree fell across the 76 and i needed a 4x4. The 360 has less than 15,000 miles on it and the main reason i am wanting to swap it. Any help would be greatly apprieated. Thanks
dude keep the 300 it is a great motor and will last forever if you take care of it i like the360's but the 300's arnt as powerful but have more reliability a buddy of mine has 475000 on his 300
I wish my F250 had a 300. I loved the reliability of the 300 I had in my E350 many years ago. It was an old Fedex truck that I got cheap and drove forever, probably put 150k on it, but the steering sucked, cause the kingpins were worn out, But otherwise, it was awesome.
The best part was the back cargo area was locked from the outside. No escape...
Thanks for the replys guys, i have owned a couple trucks in the past with 300s in them and they are great motors i have nothing against them at all but this one already has close to 400,000 miles on it, I like the power the three sixty has and I have never had any real problems out of a three sixty especially this one since it only has less than fifteen thousand miiles on it. And I would not like to have a lot of down time with this truck as I just bought it and need it to haul wood and for other things as well. Just looking to do a quick swap with the motors. Thanks again for your advice.
If you want a v8 I would sell or trade the 360 for a 351.The swap from the 300 to a 351 would be easier most all the wiring and stuff will work. One of the things you would change would be the motor mounts. The 300 is a good engine.
To answer your question, it would take quite a bit to get a FE motor in a truck that never was designed to have one. They don't have a common bell with any other engine family, and the mounts may well be located differently, so you would have to fab something to make them work. Being 4x4 makes it worse. It can be done, but expect a lot of time involved and potentially parts to make it work.
Do a search in this forum for 360 swap or 390 swap and see what comes up. We try to discourage swapping that particular type of engine in these trucks for the reason stated above, they were never designed to be installed in these trucks. But I remember a thread long ago where someone went to the trouble to do it, and they had a list of all the mix-matched pieces and the fab work needed to do it. So maybe a search will bring that thread back up.
Well after looking at the limited info on doing this, i managed to find a guy who did a 390 into a 85 f150. From what he said the only major things you have to change is the engine perch and finding a trans that will work. Which leads me to my next question what trans will work with the 360 bell housing and the transfer case in the 82, i am assuming the 4spd out of my 2wd wont work. I know this isnt the easiest swap to do but its what i want to do and i apreciate all the advice, i will document they swap in great details with lots of pics so there will be knowledge of these swaps for the future.
Personally, I would keep the 360 (or trade even for a better motor in better shape), build it into what I wanted and could afford, then sit on it until the 300 died. Only then would I change the 300 out. Then I would probably tear it apart to see if it was worth rebuilding as a spare for when the 360 died.
I have had a small block Chevy (4 bolt main) for many years, that I had started to rebuild with the intentions of putting in my truck to hot rod it out. But, once I found out how good the 300 is and the longevity of it, I couldn't bring myself to swap it out before it's time. Now, I'm just keeping the SBC around for another car that might come along.
