This is cool. I have another sound, a very high pitched tone after shut down that lasts for about 30 seconds. Very quiet, very high (like a ring in your ear sound). I kinda always thought this was the DEF pump.

For those still interested in the sound, I'm copying in some comments from another forum to get some more eyes on it here.

  • O6KMA - "Hey Epic. So ironic you posted this as my wife and myself have been trying to figure where it is coming from and why. It seems to go off a number of times as well before it stops. Exactly the same thing for me except the re-flash was done as part of the PDI when I bought the truck on Thursday last week. It seems to be coming from under the hood near the drivers side. I have no idea what it is and for."
  • GRUNTTORQUE - "Mine is doing the same thing. It sounds to me like the sound hid ballast box's make. Maybe theres a little current jumping from the parkling lights when we open the doors."
  • 06KMA - "I thought that as well however, I just got done installing side steps and the 'beeping' went off a lot. It didn't seem to have a pattern however I didn't get a stop watch out but it did go off a number of times, not just when the door was open. In fact, I don't think I had the door opened for well over 20 mins and still heard it beeping."
  • EPICCOWLICK - "EXACTLY, THAT'S what I'm talking about! The darn thing goes off whenever it wants to, sometimes when I've done nothing to the truck at all. I wouldn't care about it if I could be certain something is not draining the batteries. To make matters potentially worse, I leave my keys in the truck and use the key pad to unlock the door. All I want to do is get to my truck at the airport after a 10 day trip and find it dead as a door nail, at 2:30 in the morning, when it's snowing, and I have to go pee."

I do not have the beep from your original post, but I do have more noises from the engine bay post-shutdown after the new flash. Here is what's happening:

After engine shutdown, the EGR actuator (electric motor controlled) cycles several times. This did not happen pre-flash, or at least I never noticed it.
Then, the EGR Bypass valve actuator (vacuum controlled) loses vacuum, causing the valve to "pop" shut. This is the loudest noise I can hear from the engine bay.

What I don't get is why use an electric motor for the main EGR valve, but then turn around and use a vacuum controlled actuator for the bypass valve? They installed electronics to control the vacuum to the valve about 2 inches away, so why not just put a DC motor there instead and save the hassle of vacuum tubes?

I haven't heard the DEF pump purging the lines yet, but I would expect that noise to come from the rear, where the tank and pump are.

You should have gone in the airport where it's warm.
But I laughed at this.

I guess we'll see if I have new noises after tomorrow.
Received the "official" 10B17 letter from Ford today, too.

I guess I'm a member of the "new noises" club. Had my flash done today, and when I got home I closed the truck door and heard the beeping/buzzing noise a little while later. I opened the back door to load some cargo, closed the door, walked around the front of the truck, and heard the noise at the same time I saw the lights go off. Opened and shut the door again, and the noise came on when the lights went off. Pretty neat. I'll open the hood tomorrow and look for a possible source.

That's it, you're on the right path. I was recording another video last night and found I can set it off by pressing the hood closed switch. Sounded like the sound was coming from under the passenger side of the truck somewhere.

My truck was built on 9/9/10 and it has that sound when I open the front or rear doors. I have the remote start key fob and I always unlock the doors from the fob.

I have a new beep type noise only when I unlock the doors with the remote.
As others said, some sort if relay would be my guess.
But it goes away after a second, right after the driver door unlocks.
It's loud enough to hear outside and I didn't have it before.
However, this one doesn't bother me but it is strange how a software flash would cause a device or relay to make a noise.

I have not put my truck in the garage to hear other noises yet so that's the only one I'm aware of currently.

On the suggestion of another forum member, I've centered the sound inside the transmission, just inside the transmission pan, on the passenger side. It's easy to duplicate. When I lay underneath the truck and place my ear on the pan itself (yes, my ear on the pan, got a problem with that?), I can hear a two step tone. I can cause the buzzing sound to start with the remote key lock. Someone else can try it. Just use your lock button on the remote. You have to give the truck about 15 seconds in between each key press, but you can easily hear the tone. Those willing to do the ear thing will hear detail not audible otherwise.

Confirmation anyone? Once we have that, we can start identifying internal transmission parts that make such a sound. Perhaps a solenoid? And the golden question, is it ok for it to be actuated so frequently or is it damaging?

I hear it loudest from the attached picture.
It also makes the same noise two more times after locking the door and hearing it the first time but not every time for the second and third times after the first time. (confusing enough?)
Mine was still hot to the touch even three hours after shutdown but I got my ear close.

It's just bizzare how different this is between vehicles. I've heard everything from it sounding continuously for up to 20 mins to nothing at all. I don't understand how this can be so variable and still wondering if it is harmful.

Here's an update on the mystery sound. A good, clear recording which is centered on the transmission pan. It's easily missed when you're not paying attention to it but pretty obvious when you put a microphone on the bottom of the trans pan. Listen to this:

I hear two noises in your video. A slight buzz just before the second sound (which sounds like you have VW Bug horn stuck in your tranny).

So when I pick up my new truck this week -- what do you think my first thing I am going to be doing after they give me the keys?
