I was wondering what difference that there is between the 406 and the 410, such as cams, intakes, compression ratio's, and the ability to be put in a half ton truck (1970) which is better?
Steve
cam/intake/CR I'm not sure about, but I can tell you this about the two.
The 406 is a high revving engine, not a truck engine really. If I'm remembering correctly it's a 427 block with a different (shorter throw) crank.
The 410 is your standard 360/390 with a 428 crank. It should make much better torque from 2000-4000 rpm, and won't develop top hp till about 4500-5500rpm depending on the cam.
The 406 is likely going to cost an arm and a leg just to get the block.
The 410 is much more easily obtainable. 428 crank should run 250-400 bucks. And in my opinion, the 410 is much better to go in a truck. It's what's going into mine.
On the other hand if you want a race truck, the 406 might be the way to go. Built right it should hold high rpms all day long.
The 406 is made by putting a 390/427 crank in a 428 bore block. A 410 is a 428 crank in a 390 bore block. The 410 has a stroke advantage to it but both would be very happy in a truck. The 406 is just an .080 over 390. Its all how you build it.
Thanx for the replies, Lots of interesting information that I hadn't known before I know now, so when I pull the 390 out of my 4x4 I will try and scrounge up some cash and get me a 428 crank and make me a 410
Thanx again
Steve
