I just bought a 1993 F-350 crew cab long bed, when I bought it I thought the transmission was fine but the more I drive it the more I am doubting it. When I got it home after two hours of driving it leaked quite a bit of transmission fluid out of the vent hole on the bottom of the tranny. From reading other posts I have determined it is probably the pump seal at the end of the tranny (unless the converter is cracked) So regardless of what it is I will be removing the transmission to fix it. The other problem is that the transmission often shifts abnormally firm from first to second. It doesn't do it in any other gear and it doesn't always do it. On top of that the transmission fluid also smells really burnt which I have been told is a sign that it will fail soon. My question is what would you guys recommend from your experience with this tranny, this is the first automatic I have ever owned and I don't know much about them. Should I buy a rebuilt one and just replace it when I take it out, have it rebuilt by a local tranny shop, or is it ok and I should just replace the seal flush the tranmission and see how long it goes. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Definitely drop the pan and change fluid and filter first. Next check the MPLS on the driver's side of the transmission. If it looks gummy, filthy or anyway corroded it will have to be changed. The stock MPLS is known for allowing water into the module and malfunctioning. The replacement kit comes with new grommets and harness parts. You will have to change that old leaky grommet out. It's not that hard to do.
