I have a 1997 Expedition with 70k on the odometer. When the temperature dropped during the recent cold snap to zero the vehicle would not start and idle using the remote start, I had to go out and manually start the vehicle and nurse the gas pedal to keep it running. After about 2 minutes the vehicle would then hold at idle. When the temperature rose to about 15 degrees the vehicle would start and idle properly using the remote start. Any suggestions on where to look to begin trouble shooting, could it possibly be a faulty coolant sensor.
Just try cleaning the IAC first with carb cleaner. The small pintle pin becomes gunked up and sticks in either the open or closed position. A few shots of cleaner should do the trick.
I purchased mine a few months ago from the dealer. The parts man first inspected my truck looking for an emissions sticker to determine which IAC was appropriate for my 1999 4.6 4x4. He couldn't find the sticker he was searching for and ran my VIN through his computer, which allowed him to determine the right part #.
In all the postings I've seen on IAC replacement, I have never heard of the dealer requiring such specific info to determine the correct part number. Perhaps this is something new.
P.S. It is my understanding that IAC replacement on a 5.4 is a little more difficult than replacement on a 4.6, due to less accessibility on the 5.4. The job on a 4.6 involves unbolting the plastic "4.6" shroud over the intake manifold, unplugging the two-wire harness running to the IAC and unbolting the IAC (2 bolts).
Make sure that you save the black gasket at the bottom of your old IAC for reuse. The new IAC does not come with this gasket, although it can be ordered if you wish.
Temperature dropped to 6 degrees this morning and the Expedition fired right up with the remote start. It was warm and toasty for my way into work. It can be said I too have been a victim of the dreaded IAC disease. Of note the IAC was available from NAPA (no affiliation) for $52.99, called Friday late afternoon and they had it for me Saturday AM, not a difficult DIY. Many thanks to those for the information and assistance.
