07-11-2009 murrmeister was asking about this conversion. There were several ideals on the conversion, mainly from numberdummy, jowilker. Could murrmeister please tell me which type conversion he used and now that it is done do you think there was a easy and better conversion. Thanks kevin felix
JoWilker, I'm not very mechanically inclined, so what should I need to start looking for to do both (power brakes and power steering). Also what do you think the apx cost of these parts will total. Should I buy new or used and what in your opinon is the benefits. I would really like to have these conversions done in the next 3 to 4 months. Thanks Kevin Felix
best bet would be to find a parts truck. or a selfservice junkyard. than take everything off of the donor truck. the whole front suspension and steering. i mean everything. the ibeams from pivot to lug nuts all the steering gear, box, pump, column tie rod ends drag link everything. master cylinder prop valve hard lines hoses power brake booster. maybe even the pedal assembly. all the nuts and bolts everything. its better to have a few extra parts than to try and find something later.
clean it all up inspect all parts, obtain replacement parts as necisary and install it all in place of your origional parts.
that way in 5 years if you need a king pin or wheel bearing or a galvanised widget of some sort you dont have to think about it, you can just order the right one for the donor truck.
I was also thinking about going from a 4 speed manual transmission to a automatic, so while I'm getting the steering from a 1976 I guess I should be looking for an automatic steering colum or is this going to cause to many problems (a lot more work). I've been told that I would have to get a C6 transmission out of another Ford pickup. Could anyone tell me if the transmission out of 76 would work. I do not have to have a automatic just thought it would be a little nicer. Thanks Kevin
Kevin, Find a donor truck that has the engine and tranny that you want your truck to end up with, 100 or 250, buy it and bring it home. Leaving it can loose parts that you might leave behind.
I have done this more than once, have sold parts that I didn't use and my parts cost me -0-. You can lift the front wheels and test king pin wear before buying. I wanted a clean start so I rebuilt my engine & C6 before getting on the road. I have 43,000 miles on my 66 chassis & below.
How is your current truck setup, and what do you want to have in the end?
It is a 65 F100, standard brakes and steering (no power), the engine is a 352, the rear end is a 3.00, the it has a 4 speed manual transmission and no air either. The truck is going to be my daily driver, apx 30 to 40 miles 5 days a week and on weekends an occasional 300 to 500 miles every now and then. I probly will not be hauling anything, maybe 3 or 4 times a year only on weekends (not to heavy loads though). I would like to end up with power steering, power brakes and a/c, an automatic transmission is optional (would be nice but don't have to have)
Locate a 73-76 F100 360/C6. Most have power steering & power disc brakes.
Look for a donor in decent shape for around $500.00. Don't get in a big hurry unless the first one you see is for $300.00. When you find the one that you want check out the front end for slop, and drag it home or where evcer you can keep it for a couple months or less.
Offer for sale parts that you aren't going to use, doors, glass, bed, tailgate, etc. Make your money back. When you have gotten everything you need one of the towing companies will haul the carcass away for the scrap metal.
Kevin, I should have said FE, 360/390 same on outside.
To identify FE, intake goes under the valve covers about 1in, spark plugs are like this \\// both sides. There are others but those 2 should be enough.
Your 352 is an FE and basically the same block. It can be rebuilt if need be to a 390 or bigger. So ya got yer engine if it is ok. So a donor truck in the years stated with any Fe will have the bolt in auto trans and other parts you want.
I just got off the telephone with our local salvage yard, He told me that they had one but did not want to part withe entire truck. So I ask him what they would have to have for the front end includung the I-beams, spindles (all that I' need ) and all the p/s stuff including the steering collum. He said he'd take $150.00 for it all. I've got stuff from them in the past and they seem reasonable. What do you think. Also we talked about the kingpins being tight. He said he knew all that I needed to make the p/s and the p/b conversion. That being said what do you think. Thanks Kevin Felix
thats a good deal, but if you can find a 73-76 truck with the automatic trans you want. you might be dollars ahead.
eg i needed an fe engine for a car project of mine. all the decent fe engines for sale around here are 800- 1200 dollars. so i bought a 1975 f150 for 400 bucks. there is my engine for half price. i have buyers lined up for the trans (100 bucks) the rear end (100) and i can sell the seat (its mint) and still take the carcass to the local scrap metal yard and have 75% of my money back. not to mention that i'm gonna use the brakes and steering on my slick.
an old vehicle is usually worth less whole than its parts are worth separately.
but 150 is a good price for those parts. either way your truck will thank you. just make sure to remember what year of truck you use the parts from. and tell the new owner if/when you sell

Price is right, but I bet he wants to cut the spindles off the axles, give you the gear, column, pump. etc.
I want the complete axles, really want the whole truck until I get everything needed and the upgrade complete.
Offer him $50.00 to bring it to you, and pick up the carcass along with your old I-beams when you are finished.
