Aside from removing the shocks and "bench testing" them is there any tried and true method of determining when to replace shocks?
I will be putting on new tires in a few weeks and will do an alignment then as well. I am contemplating new shocks too. The current shocks are non-adjustable Rancho. I forget the exact model, but nothing fancy, just basic Rancho gas shocks. They currently have about 50k miles on them.
When they go bad they will no longer damp the springs correctly, so it will get bouncy after going over bumps and heavy loads won't be stabilized well.
I've got 58,000 miles on my truck and I just replaced the shocks tonight with the Rancho 9000XL. I could tell a huge difference right away just driving down the road. Mine's just a daily driver so I wanted the softest ride possible. I've only driven 5 miles to test them out tonight, but it's night and day over the stock shocks.
Don't buy "Life Time" shocks and forget about them. I take my shocks off and check them every time I replace the tires (30,000 miles or so). Even though I bought "Life Time" shocks, I found the first pair would not expand after the first set of tires wore out.
