Working on my know it all brothers truck. I've had the front hub off before but its been a while. The spindle nut is different then I remember. I was thinking it was like the rear with the notches but it is a regular nut. I cant remember the size. Does anyone know right off the size. I can borrow the socket if need be from my friend.
If anyone is wondering why I have to take it. Here's some pics.
My brother called me the other and said he had a vibration when he hit the breaks. I said to check and make sure nothing was messed up. I just thought he had a slightly warped rotor and the pads were getting a little warn. So he said he didnt see anything and kept driving it. He comes home last night and said he broke a brake line and had no brakes.
Being a stubborn little brother, who thinks he knows everything because he took an auto tech class at school, wouldnt go out side to help figure out what line it was. Well I decided to crawl under and look. The first thing I saw was half a rotor . And he hasnt looked under it yet. He still swears its a line and for me not to touch it. So i took the keys and pull it by the shop and took it apart since he doesnt know how.
Maybe it can be turned...into a few bucks for scrap or something. Or a jonboat anchor.
When you go to remove that nut there is a semicircle ring with a 90* tab on it. The ring sits in the gap between the nut and the spindle and the tab goes into the slot on the spindle which prevents the nut from backing off. If you don't pull that ring then you will: 1) Have hell getting the nut off. 2) Destroy the tab that goes in the spindle slot. 3) Never find that tab i nusable condition for sale. You will then have to buy a lot of unnecessary parts to get one or not use it and run the risk of the nut backing off and killing the bearings, races, seal, brake tabs, pads, rotor, locking hubs, spindle, etc.
Moral of the story - Don't forget to pull that ring/tab thingy and don't lose it.
The only way I know of to get one is through ford. You have to buy a whole kit for like 58 bucks or something.
This is the part number, I think its just for auto hubs..

Edthepartsguy is where I got mine
Can someone post a picture of there spindle nut? Apparently there are two types I think mine are the old type. And mine isnt a double nut type like most are talking about.

I was referring to a Dana 50 with auto hubs. It may be different for manual hubs or the Dana 60 but I do not know.
