I found my F1 about 40 miles from my house. The truck was in Charlestown, WV. The PO said he drove the truck from southern California all the way to West Virginia towing a PS 1800 Volvo. Everybody selling vintage tin says it's from California, but when I purchased the truck, the title was from LA. He towed the Volvo all the way with the original 215 engine!! I drove mine home in 1995. Got it for $2500. Best $2500 I ever spent!!
Will be 3 yrs. end of Oct drove from Pt.St.Lucie , Fla. thru N.Y.City on a rainy fri .nite( that sucked ) because Mapquest stated that was the way to go to Caanan ,Ct ( up in the N.W. corner ) to retieve the stock '52 F-1 truck onder const .Stayed at my buddy's house in Sandy Hook for a week and helped him with a job . The drive back was around N.Y. city ( no tolls ) with only one blow out on the way on the F-1 just after I left Sandy Hook . Old tire ,so put the spare on from the Dodge Van and was on the road again .
The perk on the way up was a stop at the Air & Space Museum in Chantilly , Va.. It is a must see . The first plane to see upon entry is a SR71 . AWESOME !! This museum is just plain BAD A$$ . Please if anyone is in the area stop and spend the day . It is worth it !!!
Small world! I'm originally from Connecticut and I now live in the town just north of Chantilly,Va. I drive by the Museum every day on my commute to work!!
The farthest I have gone is about 200 miles for some parts for a 78 F100 that I had. I had the added bonus of meeting Fomoko1 and checking out all his stuff and some of the other FTEr's from that area. So it was a very good trip.
I've done a fly-and-drive, or a rail-and-drive, or just a plain 'ole road trip over a dozen times since 2000 - and I've only not made it home twice. I took a 24 hour Bus trip to Gastonia, NC, in Jan 2000 and drove home in a '69 cadillac. I've been to Southern California twice, and driven home in a Professional Car both times. I've taken a train to Richmond, Virginia, to pick up a '73 Cadillac, which I drove home on US 129 and the Cherohala Skyway. I lost a brake line in that car at Fontana Villiage, and drove on Highway 28 all the way to Robbinsville with the trans in low and alternating feet pumping the brake pedal. I once drove home from Kirkland, IL in a '74 Ford C900 Fire Truck that only had 4th and 5th gear. I took another Bus (along with my girlfriend! She's a keeper) to somewhere in Texas and tried to pick up the "Fire Truck of Death" but didn't make it back with that one, an early 80's F600 Fire Truck with two 370 engines - one mounted to a Hale fire pump behind the cab. Now that one's a story... My first Fire Truck was a '71 International Fleetstar 2000D from Sterling, IL. What a beautiful truck that one is! My second failure was a '70 Superior Pontiac Bonneville Hightop Ambulance that I flew to Southern Idaho to pick up in Dec. 2006. It died on I-70 just outside of Salina, Utah, and had to be hauled the rest of the way after I flew home so I could make it to work. What memories...
In January of this year I drove 1006 miles one way from Ky to Nebraska to pick up my 99 crewcab powerstroke. I then drove my powerstroke from ky to arkansas to pick up my 52 F1 in June.
