Thought I would ask
Steve
You do know they are both made by GM,in the SAME assembly plants don't you?
GM does make excellent trucks, as far as being the "toughest", it's all a matter of what means more to you.
GM trucks have a better ride and better handling-barring the Lightning of coarse. Ford has a stronger front axle set up( 250's and 350's-the 150 uses the same"type" of front axle as GM trucks, but it's not built near as heavily)
GM trucks have engines with higher horsepower and greater torque - and contrary to what many here believe they've got just as much low end grunt as well,it's just that they also keep peaking out alot higher whereas Ford's actually lose some power at higher rpm's.
If you go off road alot then the Ford is without a doubt the way to go-front axle clearance isint really much better (1') but it's strength and durability is.
I would say the Ford has a better Diesel if you were considering that option and the 7.3 was still an option-but it is not.
I do believe that the new 6.0 PSD will in the end be the better engine as it's still made with cast iron, but we really don't know as yet as it's too new(hell, for all we know it might never get worked out-and then Ford brings back the 7.3-not likely I know, but the only reason I can even make a statement like that is because it really is that new and there have already been many major problems) so for now the duramax actually has the edge in real world durability regardless of who likes to hear that or not.
Same goes for the Allison transmission-it has had many problems but it is now without a doubt THE number 1 auto tranny in it's class- the Torqueshift has yet to be put through it's real-world paces.
Manual transmission is moot as they are the same ZF tranny used in both(actually it's my opinion that both Ford and GM missed the boat here-the NV5600 is a 360lb CAST IRON MONSTER that runs on real gear oil and not ATF as does the ZF-but it's only available in the Dodge Ram Cummins diesel).
Ford,I believe has better quality fit and finish-esp interior.
As far as frames go -I like fords beefier framerails more than GM's-but I also like the hydro tube steel cross members GM uses better than Ford's stampings.
I guess my point is this- ask around abit-try to get as much UNBIASED information on whatever you got your eye on, as well as it's competition-become an informed buyer-and most certainly NEVER EVER take the manufacturer's advertising at face value.
Sorry this was so long winded, but my posts' usually are...lol.
Regards.
