Not really, no. Quite fast I think but the higher center of gravity may pose an issue at higher speed manouvering.
I think we will be seeing some F-150's on the road soon to replace the F250's that are out there.
Police vehicles will certainly experience a significant change over the next while, with the Crown Vic, the mainstay in policing, going out of production.
It will be interesting to see which police package vehicle, which include the new Ford Taurus, the new GM Caprice (think that's the name they will use)...the current Dodge Charger........ will take over the lion's share of the police market in North America.
The GM and Dodge are RWD .
The Taurus is front wheel drive of course and from what I understand many police forces weren't pro FWD....at least in the past. But the fuel economy with the Taurus V6 probably is better then a V8. Maybe the fuel mileage will be enough to counter the FWD issue some depts. have.
Also the Taurus seems to be more of a look towards future police packages with the V6 and FWD....think AWD may be an option.
The Explorer, Tahoe are interesting police package vehicles, but I'm not sure about the gas mileage. I suspect they would use more fuel and be more expensive to buy, then a car based cruiser.
I have noticed a lot of Tahoes in Ontario that the OPP use on the highway. They seem to be quick (5.3 V8) and also look like their ride height has been reduced quite a bit....I'm sure to improve handling .
The OPP seems to use a fair number of Chargers on the highway.
I recall years ago (96-97) when GM cut production of the RWD police Caprice V8. After the Caprice police cars were retired from service....Ford really took control of the police package market.
Police depts. didn't gravitate towards the FWD Impala in any great numbers. But then I don't think Dodge has had a huge impact up to now with the RWD Charger.
It will be interesting to see what happens in this market, now that for the most part ...all, except Dodge and the Tahoe, have gone back to square 1, with new police package, products.
I've sold a few of the current model Explorer to local PDs...generally in rural areas where 4X4 is more important than pursuit capability. An Interceptor package will make the new model very attractive to these departments.
